Funding a paved runway

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
For any of the clubs that have paved their runway, how did you club obtain the funds to build the runway? Most clubs do have limited funds mainly coming from member dues, a couple of years ago I asked a paving contractor a price for a 60X800 runway which worked out to around $50,000. Just a bit expensive.

Just wondering how other clubs manged to do it.

Thanks

Re: Funding a paved runway

$50,000 sounds pretty steep.
Maybe he either didn't want the job, or he was just out for the money grab.

I paved my driveway 20' x 100' in the middle of Toronto for $4,000.

Re: Funding a paved runway

60x800 is 48,000 feet, at 50,000, that is about $1/SQ ft,

Your 20x100 is 2000 feet, at 4,000 that is $2/SQ ft.

Don't understand how yours is cheaper???

Holy carp!

60 x 800' what the heck are you guys flying there?!? Our club has a paved runway, done about 25 years ago and is now in need of some serious repairs. it is an "A" shaped runway that is 300' on the long legs, 280' on the cross leg, and 30' wide. Jet fliers would like an extra 100' added on, but 800' is extreme!

Be sure to tell the contractor that what you are looking for does not have to support a lot of weight. It is not a parking lot or a road. Then in order to make it last, keep vehicles (cars, trucks, tractors) off of it!

We raised the funds through BINGOs but the rules have changed now so I have no idea how we would do it today.

Re: Funding a paved runway

Hi,

Along time ago I came across a description of a fabric that some clubs were laying down as a runway as an alternative to pavement. This was done where the field was not allowed to be paved for environmental reasons and it was less expensive. I did a quick search and found the following, I sure you can find more information if needed. See below:

Also a thread at RC Universe talking about it

Re: Funding a paved runway

you would be better spending that kind of coin on a nice grass strip.

Concrete and pavement is way overrated in my books.

You can fly anything off a well prepared chunk of green and the atmosphere it creates cannot be matched..

........ naturally, "in my opinion"
