The front fuselage section got carved and rough sanded to shape. Soon realized I made a mistake in radome, the first disk should have been 1/2" larger in diameter so it could get blended into the fuselage section. Not the end of the world though, just more filler. But after carving and sanding, and before applying the wet filler, the forward section weighed in at 7.675 oz's and with the radome attached, only 9.8 oz's. Not too bad for the section being 43" long and 5" wide.

Tools I used to carve and shape the foam was a large Dewalt razor knife and a Dura Grit 80 grit sanding block. Both make quick work of the task.

Re: Twin EDF Mig-25 Foxbat

The forward section with the drywall compound filler just applied and hanging infront of a fan. The area where the radome meets the fuselage will need a second application of filler as it is about 3/16" at it's thickest depth and when the filler drys, it skrinks slightly.

Hope it'll be dry enough later this afternoon to sand and reapply the filler.

Next, the main fuselage.

Re: Twin EDF Mig-25 Foxbat

Started the main fuse section yesterday, getting big. Today, I'll make the fuselage bottom, gotta do some figuring as I have to make full length strips and glue them together to compensate the curved shapes of the nacelles.

Also, the nose section will get most of that drywall compound sanded off.

A friend of mine, whose hobby is metal work offered to make struts for me so they will look beefy and more scale like. It's good to have friends with a machine shop.

But, as we all do, once we get to a certain point, we just have to put the parts together to see how it'll look. Wow, that's a lot of foam ..........

Not too bad for about three to four days total work.

Re: Twin EDF Mig-25 Foxbat

Excellent size John!
Twin 90's both with 6S peaks my interest. So nice to fly two similar common batteries. Take a pair of batteries normally used in most 90mm models and you can fly a really large twin.
Will you be fiber-glassing the exterior or how will you add strength and finish the surface?
Thanks Eric

Re: Twin EDF Mig-25 Foxbat

I was thinking of using a twin 8 cell setup with Change Sun fans, Mega motors. Would like the amp draw in or under the 90 amp range. I could also use Hoaye fans as they would be in that range as well. The 7 cell setup using the Hoaye fans generate 2025 watts of power at 78 amps.

The entire fusealge will be covered in 1.8 oz cloth and epoxy. I use this to glass the nose sections of that smaller Mig-25 and my foam Arrow. Provides a very strong ding proof surface for those. Also, the 1.8 cloth has a fairly tight weave so tge finished surface does not require as much finishing resin to obtain that smooth metal like finish. The wings and twin vertical fins will get a similar treatment but will have some carbon fiber cloth over the aluminum spars. The horizontal stab will be getting covered in carbon cloth, this surface will need to be very rigid and strong.

Re: Twin EDF Mig-25 Foxbat

2000 watts is pretty easy to achieve with a CS9012 or TAFT 11 blade fan and a cheap 1600kv motor on 6S. Most of my 90mm jets run similar power and the GensAce 5500mah 25C 6S packs hold up well. I currently am running one with over 150 cycles but many more over 100.
I wouldn't aim for using an 8S twin setup simply due to battery and HV ESC costs (and weight). Two 6S fans should produce at least 4.4kg thrust. Keep the plane at around 6-7kg total and it will be a great performer.

Here is the complete fan and motor

X-Flight is reputable and all my CS fans were of the highest quality and strength (unlike HK).

Looking good, what kind of power setup will you install ?
