Tuning a Quad?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hey guys, I'm looking for some help here as I am not a "motor" guy! I've got a replacement DLE222 that a buddy is lending me while mine is on its way to (hopefully) get fixed. This is basically a new engine that was run twice on the test stand before I got it and I have put about 8 flights on it since. It definitely needs some tuning (running a bit rich) and I'm looking for some hints/tips as to how you guys go about tuning a quad??

Thanks!

Re: Tuning a Quad?

Hi Gordon, in the past I have tuned by ear to start. I then use a tach and tweak to maximum on the high. (some said to run the rear cylinders a bit richer, but I found the cooling was so good the needle setting were the same)

Then I go to the LO needle and I adjust both carbs equally till it won't transition properly and then richen slightly till the transition is correct.

The I go to the high needles and re-do both carbs again...very small increments.

Then I fly it hard, land and check the plugs and do minor adjustments as necessary.

From there I listen to it in the air and make small adjustments as needed...

Takes a long time as you know Gordon, as when they're new they richen as they break in.

Some will richen the HI needle 100 rpm. Personal preference I guess. I never have..I tweak to the MAX (from the get-go) and never an issue on any number of cylinders.

That's my story!!

Re: Tuning a Quad?

Thanks Jack, that is exactly the kind of expertise I was looking for!

Re: Tuning a Quad?

Hi Gordon,
Like Jack said. You tune by ear. You will feel it and you will hear it in the air when all four cylinders are singing in harmony

Another thing that helped me. I used a seperate fuel tank for each carburator.
After flying I would look at the fuel levels of each tank. You could tell if the front cylinders or the rears were running more rich than the other pair.

Also as Jack mentioned. I also tuned both carbs the same. The baffling you built around the cylinders is very efficient.
When I ran the quad, I would measure the temps of all 4 cylinders. The rears were never any warmer than the fronts

Re: Tuning a Quad?

The twin fuel tanks is a huge help! I had a bit of trouble fine tuning the Mintor220 until I went to twin tanks and I could then get the carbs perfectly synch'd

On both my quads, I found when the weather got cool (ie: less the 5 deg, the baffling was soo efficient that the quads had trouble staying warm, which causes you to run in circles with the tuning. In the last few projects, I have now left more gap around the motor for the baffling to reduce efficiency. Brent's is the latest and I think he's been very happy so far.

Re: Tuning a Quad?

I've got a two tank setup as well so I'll be able to keep an eye on which carb is more thirsty. I've been turning the needles on both carbs in this process. Do any of you guys work on just one carb at a time?

Re: Tuning a Quad?

I've always played with both at the same time unless you're into the fine tuning stage with the twin tank method (surprising how a blade width adjustment on one carb can make a visible difference with fuel level after a 12min flight!!).

The Mintor220 instructions say that the rear carb should be 1/16 more rich than the front. I found with both it and the 3W220 and Jack Marcotte's DA200 that the cylinders start fighting each other if the carbs aren't the same. Perhaps not the case with the DLE222 though.
