Looking for input and help on a couple of vintage Pattern kits

1. I just picked up a vintage (late 70's early 80's) kit for the Dirty Birdy. This is the .60 size all balsa version and I am considering building it with the new Evolution 15cc gasser. I'll be busy with IMAC this coming season but I might slip over to the dark side and fly in a pattern contest at the Intermediate/Advanced level. Am I correct in thinking that this should be a moderately competitive airframe (at least at the local level) ??

2. A few months ago I picked up another vintage pattern kit for the "Acro Knight" by IM Products. This was designed for a .45 to .50 and it features flaps and speed brakes on the fuse side. The kit is complete except for the plans. Its a long shot but is there anybody out there who might have a set I could borrow and copy??

Hi Gord,

You will probably get lots of insight/opinions over at the Classic Pattern forum on RCU Usually lots of activity there.

I believe the classic guys also hang out at RCG.

So you are saying that an old school Dirty Birdy has the same competitive ability in today's pattern schedule as a Cub would in IMAC??? The modern F3A pattern plane is obviously optimized for the current F3A schedule but is it really necessary (to be competitive) to fly that type of airframe in the classes below Masters?? You fly your modern pattern plane really well and it will be interesting to see how an older style (pre-turnaround) stacks up against it.

You will be fine Gord, although I would probably try to get a hanno or one of the remade ys ar's for it instead of the gas option (heavier per power output of glow or electric).

What happened to your Helios?

I got rid of all my slimer support gear so I'm not going back there LOL.
It will either be gas or electric. Now that Dennis has thrown down the gauntlet I might have to go electric to get the best power to weight ratio

I sold the Helios a couple of years ago but I really did enjoy flying that plane!

Will, I will definitely consider your contest (depending on the IMAC schedule this year).
