Question, Oil soaked wood....

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
I seem to remember a commercially available stain remover that did a pretty good job of pulling oil residue out of balsa and plywood. I'm thinking about recovering an old Goldberg Chipmunk, but the I'm pretty sure some of the covering wouldn't go back on all that easily...

I think the stuff I used (~10 years ago) was a spray on cleaner that left behind a white powder containing some of the oil. Anyone remember a product like this? Or even better, what's your best method for removing glow oil residue?

Thanks,
Kelly

Thanks guys,

Wayne, nope its still toast and will be until the end of civilization (See photo...) The con rod broke and damaged pretty much everything in one way or another. All I could possibly reuse is the OS carb, cylinder head, crank case back plate, and glow plug... I can't complain too loud though, as it did last ~8 years of abuse!

I'm going to test fly it with an OS 91 2-stroke and see if its worth cleaning her up a bit. Thought about it after coming across a spare cowl and a bunch of Monocote in my stash of extra stuff.

Hey Ron, isn't that quote more like "Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a Q-tip"

Heres another suggestion that I would seriously consider.

After using the K2R to soak up the oil, I would brush a coating of Balsarite on the wood where you will be recovering. If there is even a hint of oil left in the wood you will have problems getting the covering to stick with out the use of Balsarite. Don't put it on too thick, one coat is sufficient.

Balsarite will assure a good recovering job. It can be purchased at most Local Hobby Stores and it comes in two types, one for fabric covering and one for the plastic film types like Monocote or Ultracote! Its about $12 for a small tin if memory serves me correctly but it goes a long way and is well worth the cost to prevent the frustration of having the covering come loose. Just iron the covering on as you normally would.

I use Balsarite on all my planes especially where the seams overlap and around the firewall to prevent oil creep in areas where you get oil from the engine splattering on the covering.

Hope this helps and good luck on the rework!

Gary,
I'll second that suggestion. Have you tried nitrate dope? That's what I have been using for a number of years now instead of balsarite. It's as thick as the fabric formula but works not only better than balsarite but mush cheaper too. A quart at the local airport for a $20.00 bill.

Good suggestions, thanks guys!

Thinking about this more and more, I'd love to have a newish Chipmunk again. Its just too fun an airplane to get rid of while in flying condition... This one's pretty beat up now from all the years. I even had a mid-air with it about 2 years ago when someone took a big chunk out of the rudder. It looks way out of place with fresh covering on it...

As usual, RCCanada comes through...

Your very welcome.

I know what you mean about the Chipmunk. They are an awsome plane! I flew one for a couple of seasons a few years back and I still miss that plane!

Too bad Goldberg hadn't designed a 90 or a 1.20 size chipmunk. You know, it might be an interesting project increasing the plans size and scratching one! Hmmmmmm....... Yeah, like I need another plane but its not a matter of need in this hobby, its more like .... "I want it!!!" LOL!

Good luck on the re-work and happy flying!

Other options can be found here;

You can also go to RC Universe and do a search, the topic comes up every now and again with suggestions from everyone from carpet cleaners to chemists. There are a lot of products out there that do work.

Good luck
