30% plane on skiies?
Does anyone practice "winter flying" on skiies? What can I expect to go wrong? Surely someone has done it.

Re: 30% plane on skiies?
I don't see why not? As long as you get big ski you should be good, I have a pair of .60 size ski and should be good.

Re: 30% plane on skiies?
I have a 12 pound plane, span of 96 in. powered by a super tiger 90 on skiies which measure 3 inches by 20 inches. Tail dragger with the summer wheel still on the back.

Re: 30% plane on skiies?
The thing you have to watch for the most is that the ski tips are tied back so that they can't dip in flight. If your ski tips get pulled down in flight, you're pretty much guaranteed to lose your plane.

Re: 30% plane on skiies?
Can't beat jaydee aluminum skiis, I have been flying on them for 15 years. I use them on everything from a 40 trainer to my pitts 12 with saito 180. A little pricey at $50, but last a lifetime and take 38 seconds to install. no messing around with springs and string.

Re: 30% plane on skiies?
I'm putting together a Super Decathlon for winter flight on skis. People I know say the ground performance is even better than on grass.
What I'd like to know more about is operating temperature limits with nitro engines. I seemed to find that as the temp starting getting towards 0c this fall, my 2-stroke wasn't running as well. |

Re: 30% plane on skiies?
Love the look of those Jaydees. No unsightly bungees and limit cables. Definitely going to have a look at them.
As for running poorly in colder weather, most likely you need to go to a warmer plug. I find regardless of mixture "tweaking", everything that runs an OS #8 in the summer will pretty much quit in flight at anything but full throttle until I switch them to a #3. My biggest complaint regarding colder weather is the oil takes a bit more work to wipe off at the end. |

Re: 30% plane on skiies?
Hi Vettster,
Here is a little text to go with the photo. The aluminum I found to make these is 80 thou thick. The hardback is cottenwood 5/8 thick. To keep the wood from splitting I put a laminate of thin alu on each side. The retainer just a piece of alu scrap I found and put 2 set screws in it. The piano wire anchored at the back is what keeps the ski level.

Re: 30% plane on skiies?
If you find that you're skiis stick to the snow a quick spray of PAM does wonders.
