Looking to get started
I've had an interest in RC helicopters since I was younger and recently I've wanted to kind of get into the hobby, however I really don't know much about it at all.
I'd like to get nitro chopper, but it seems hard to find these or maybe it's just me since I don't know where to actually buy them from and the 1 hobby shop in my city only carries like 4 different electric heli's. So I was hoping some of you guys could point me in the right direction, what do I need to get started with a nitro chopper, where is a good place to buy one, what does a noob need to know? |

Re: Looking to get started
I feel your pain. I got back into helicopters a couple of years ago and the majority are electrics now. Great Hobbies lists one, but temporarily out of stock. Check also with Helidirect, Rotorquest, RC Japan (great shipping times from them). Those are the places that come to mind off the top of my head. I'll be kicking myself when others chime in with the ones that for whatever reason I couldn't remember.
I should add, nothing against the electrics... I just love my gasser and nothing beats the smell of nitro.

Re: Looking to get started
Its probably best to get to your local model club field and meet up with some of the heli fliers there. You can get a lot of information first hand, and learn enough so that you can make an informed decision about what you want and what you need.

Re: Looking to get started
I started back into the hobby 3 years ago, found a CX2 was great to get me going. If you have no flying experience a small beginner heli is a great way to go. It will save you a fortune, when you have mastered a fixed pitch heli like a CX2 (although I think they discontinued it) move up to a collective pitch heli. Everything has gone electric, it is far easier to get flying when you get to the field so it is a good way to go. I agree with Max that you should visit your local club. Visit www.maac.ca and look for a local club in zone M.

Re: Looking to get started
Hello Anthony, welcome aboard, I am a nitro freak and can try and answer any of your questions.
There are so many different ways to go here with this, I'm not quite sure if your up to speed on what a setup would cost you to start with. First thing you need to do is find out who sells nitro's and which brand you'd like to start with. The sizing is where they get expensive, burning fuel in a .90 size bird eats fuel like nothing you've experienced so start with a .30 or .50 size helicopter. The .50 is most common now, the brands depend on where you deal, thehelifarm.com is an excellent choice, they stock the Synergy N5c , Century Radikal 640, and can also get a Hawk Pro kit in .30 size if you'd like to be fuel efficient while learning. They have also brought on Thunder Tiger as a brand of helicopter as well, which there is an X50 nitro that's awesome as well. Feel free to pm me if you'd like any questions answered. |
