Did you notice it is a two place aircraft? The fin is taller than normal. I think the howling noise is caused by the gears in the supercharger. It is geared up about ten to one.

Canopy also stands much taller off the fuselage aft with a noticeable forward rake.

The Spit seemed to have more of a whine. I thought it might be the gear reduction box for the prop drive, assuming the Spit is powered by a Merlin.

Spits with the same merlin have no howl. The best guess to date is that it is the gun ports that make the whine. Mustangs that didn't whine went under restoration and after adding the gun ports the whine was back. Still a bit of a mystery as their is no concrete proof as to what causes the whine.
