limited control movement - I'm confused.
Hi,
Need some advice from the glider pilots here. My Sobox Max 1.5M glider is as follows............. Type: Pod and boom V-tail, fully molded, electric powered, aerobatic glider with moderate thermal capability. Wing: 59" inch span - chord at root 7 3/4 in. - area 410 sq. in - airfoil SD7084 - swept planform - dihedral tips - 2 servo, 53% span ailerons - no flaps. Servos: 2 aileron - 2 Vtail Power: Mega 16/15/5 direct drive - 7.08" x 3.15" folder prop - batteries 7 cell Kan NiHM 1050 and 9 cell Kan NiMH 1300. AUW: with Kan 1050 = 24 oz. - with Kan 1300 = 27 oz. Computer calculated predictions: for Kan 1050 battery at full throttle ---- prop pitch speed = 39 mph level flight speed = 16 mph static thrust = 18 oz. level flight thrust = 17 oz. static amps = 13A for Kan 1300 battery at full throttle ----- prop pitch speed = 47 level flight speed = 17 mph static thrust = 27 oz. level flight thrust = 25 oz. static amps = 18A My plan is to use the 1050 battery for getting thermaling altitudes. And the 1300 battery for mild areobatics. Later, I can add a gearbox and larger prop for even better prop efficency and resultant increased thrust. OK - now that you've got a good idea of what I'm dealing with, here are the areas I need advice............... 1) SETTING UP THE CONTROL SURFACES. Seems these fully molded craft don't usually come with any instructions at all and mine is no exception. The ailerons are top hinged and will move up 90 degrees, but they only move down about 5 degrees. The ruddervators are top hinged too and will move up 90 degrees, but only move down about 6 degrees. It would seem that I could increase downward travel by removing material from either the trailing edge of the wing or stab OR from the leading edge of the aileron or ruddervator. I would like to use V-tail mixing and aileron mixing. I want to use aileron mixing for spoilerons ( landing ) and some camber (chasing thermals). I'll be looking to have some aileron differential dialed in as well as aileron/rudder mixing. So here is where I'm confused --- How will the elevator ever work for pitching the nose down if it only deflects down about 6 degrees? How can the rudder work effectively if one of the ruddervators can only move 6 degrees? I guess I can live with ailron down only 5 degrees since I'll have aileron/rudder mixing, and 5 degrees down should be ok for camber setting, but if the rudder is not working effectively seems turning is gonna be a problem. Anyways - that's just thoughts for thermaling use. What about when there are no thermal s and I've got the big thrust battery in and I just wanna have some hotliner fun? Are those limited downward control surface movements going to limit my arobatics possibilities? And if I remove some material to get the downward movement, is there a way to deal with the big gap that is left, and will that gap cause drag I don't need for thermalling?
