Re: i need some esc advice please

The 35 should be fine unless there is reason to draw more amps such as in a scale application or 3d. If you feel the motor and speed control are getting hot after use then you can change the gear ratio to lower the amperage draw with the added bonus of longer flight times. You did not say what the RPM per volt was, but I run an 11 tooth pinion to 150 main on a 4100 KV motor to match up with the gear ratio. The 12 and 13 tooth pinions match up better to lower KV motors.

Re: i need some esc advice please

The HK-2221-8 is rated for 45 Amps. Your going to cook the 35 Amps ESC.

Like MTYMYK said, the Castle Phoenix Ice 50 is a good bet. The Ice Lite will also save on space and weight for the same price.

Fly Safe.

Al

Re: i need some esc advice please

I could not get the 50 ice to fit in the frame - I had to go for the ICE Lite

I'm not sure if I agree or dont agree. Because the motor is rated at 45 amps, that is not to say that he will draw that much on this particular heli & his flying style.

Theory of flight dictates the 450 heli will "fly"(generate X grams of lift) for a given RPM and pitch. Assuming he will fly at 2000 RPM, the motor speed will be governed by the blade @2000 RPM and pitch.. I doubt he will draw more than 15A at hover. Since he says he is not going to do any Hard 3D, Maybe 25A for some mild 3-D?

Of course this is all just speculation on everyone's behalf. The only way to assess this properly is hard data, not opinion.

If it were me, I would use a Data logger like Eagletree or the Watt's up, do a flight and get some real data that can be analyzed. IF you dont have one, beg or borrow one from someone who has. You only need 1 or 2 flights to get the data.

Failing that, you can take a fully charged battery, HOVER (and only hover) for precisely 2 minutes on the timer, then recharge. Based on what the battery takes back, you can calculate current draw (on hover)

In the table below, look up what your battery takes back (after EXACTLY 2 minutes of flight, no more and no less). Look up what the battery takes back in the first column, then read off your current draw in Amps in the second column.

ie- if you flew for 2 minutes and recharged your battery and it took back 500mah, then the table shows 500mah equates to 15 Amps. Do this several times and you will have a pretty accurate idea what your current draw is.
  • Mah/2min, = Amp/Hr
  • 333, = 10
  • 367, = 11
  • 400, = 12
  • 433, = 13
  • 467, = 14
  • 500, = 15
  • 533, = 16

  • 667, = 20
  • 700, = 21
  • 733, = 22
  • 767, = 23
  • 800, = 24
  • 833, = 25
  • 867, = 26
  • 900, = 27
  • 933, = 28
  • 967, = 29
  • 1000, = 30
  • 1033, = 31

Re: i need some esc advice please

Calculating based on how much the battery takes back is good for figuring out the average load, but won't tell you what the spikes are - and they are important.

For example, you may be only 15amps to hover, but might be pulling a lot more on spool up. Or if you only hover 99% of the time, but one day you decide to punch it a bit. Maybe you crash and don't hit throttle hold right away - that under-rated ESC is going to go up in smoke when the current spikes too much.

Re: i need some esc advice please

If you go with the CC Ice 50/Ice lite 50, there have been several reports that the ESC's overheat and burn up. There are multiple posts on other forums about this. It has to do with the PWM programming of the ESC. If you get one, make sure you read the posts or send an email to CC and ask for advice on a particular motor combination with that ESC.

Re: i need some esc advice please

The CC recommended settings for a scorpion motor are low timing and a pwm of 8.

this has been an issue mainly with the CC120 HV right out the box, reports of it catching fire at first plug in... never hear anything else about other CC escs, I've had a CCIceLite 50 and a CCIce100, flawless so far... and the IceLite is the way too go for your 450 rather than the Ice..
