Hobby Poxy Stuff ????

I have recently aquired some Hobby Poxy "Stuff". No its not for sale guys. I need to know what to use to thin this stuff. It says to use Hobby Poxy thinner but seeing as how I don't have any and I'm not sure its available, what else can I use? I am hoping that it is the same as "fill in blank".

Thinner

I believe that you could use Coverite Ironex or Methyl Ethyl Keytone. Never liked the stuff, as it had a high shrink rate
and was hard to sand. Use for pinholes in balsa sheets or planking, otherwise advise to use Microballoons.

Hi

Ironex and especially MEK should only be used in a well ventilated area. Very bad stuff.

Cheers

There was a thinner called Klenks or something close to that name that we used as a cheaper substitute for the HobbyPoxy thinners.

Smells

Yes, the Klenks was from breathing in too much and klenking your head on the workbench I believe.

I think it was available through Home Hardware but you may want to try Home Depot and/or Rona.

I haven't used MEK, but it is close to THF (tetrahydrafuran ?). We turn down jobs where this is recommended. In our 3,500 square foot shop, when the guys were using it, the people in the office were getting headaches. Very bad chemical. It is used to glue foam PVC (sintra) sheets together for the best bond.

Use it outside or if in a garage, have a fan pulling the fumes to the outside with the garage door open.

Yes MEK is Very Very very bad stuff.

I used to work for a Marine Test Equipment company and I use to make custom cables for the equipement. We used MEK to clean and soften up the urethane jakets on the cables before we molded on the connectors.

We had a fire inspector come through and rip the owner a new a**hole because we stored the stuff out in the open. He said a 5 gallon container left open over night in the warehouse, about 5000 sq.ft. would level the building when the warehouse heater fired up the next morning. Doesn't take much to set this stuff off. It has a very low flash point. We immediately got one of those heavy duty metal cages, like they store propane tanks in, and bolted to the wall on the outside of the warehouse.
After that I did all my cleaning of calbles outside.

Deffinitely do NOT use this stuff in your house or even your garage if the door is closed.

Holy smokes, not sure I want MEK around at all. I have some toluene in a pint container in my basement shop. Is that a bad idea as well? I don't use it much, maybe twice in the 3 years I have had it. My shop has 2 high cf/m fans that exhaust to the outside. When I have them on I open 2 windows down here to make a fresh air entrance. Fumes get blown out and fresh air gets pulled in.
