TopFlite Contender build thread

Here you go guys, I'll be posting on the building process of my TopFlite Contender. It's an old style aircraft but it should be fun. I'll put a
SuperTiger .61 in it.

As you can see, the Rudder is different than the one on the plan.
It will be my little personal touch, I don't like the shape of the original one.
Tonight I'll assemble the fin.

My plan protector is the backing plastic I picked up from a roll of Century 21.

Re: TopFlite Contender build thread

Hi Jean Pierre, That looks like a fun build. What kind of clamps are you using?

Re: TopFlite Contender build thread

I'm doing one right now for another flyer, did the same thing with the rudder. Almost ready to start covering, all control surfaces will have monokote hinges. Only thing I don't like so far, is that for a Gold Edition kit, the massive amount of shaving required to shape the wing leading and trailing edges! What a waste of balsa. I'd rather have seen 3/32 sheeting to the spar, and then capped ribs, with sheeting at the trailing edge, over trailing edge stock, makes for a stronger wing, and easier covering. Owner supplied an evolution 61 for it, should be more than enough power I'd say.

Re: TopFlite Contender build thread

Looking good Jean Pierre. You will have to do a bit of sanding with the balsa block when doing the front end.

Re: TopFlite Contender build thread

Yeah I noticed there was a few big square balsa blocks in the box. That's allright.
I will sand.
Thanks

Re: TopFlite Contender build thread

Built 1 a few years ago and used a older OS surpass .70 FS. That 'ol FS would pull the Contender off the runway at half throttle and only use about 60 feet! I never had any problems with that plane, great flyer she was. Had over 170 flights on it before one day I got too low pulling an outside loop and that was the end of (Connie) as I called her.

Re: TopFlite Contender build thread

If you have the option to build the flap operational do it!

My GAS Contender 81" 26cc is incrediable and fun to fly with the flap - you can do fly bys at a walking pace etc.

Re: TopFlite Contender build thread

Hey, I did'nt know they made a bigger size one, nice bird Ken!
Hello Bob these are clamps I found at a dollar store one day, but I cant find them no more they were $1 for a set of six I think. They are cheap and break easily though. CT sells something like that too.
Here are a few pics of the progress.

The Stab-elevator and the fin-rudder are completed.
The wire joiner is fitted too. The wing is well started too.
Its true that there is a lot of useless balsa to shave and sand.
More pics to come soon.

Re: TopFlite Contender build thread

They don't make a bigger one - I took the basic outline shape and scratch CADdesign/built it myself had everything laser cut for my own do it self kit. Its a got a 2 piece wing new airfoil and the fuse is more curvy from the top view. Worth the work - Orange & White really shows up great in sky
