Tom,
I dont think anyone who has run a wide variety of engines would dissagree with you on that. WHy some brands are picked up and promoted over others is just business. I assume there is more $$ to be made by selling volume and its probably a better descision to sell a few brands and push the crap out of them rather than offer a larger number of engines (and have the greater amount of stuff to deal with when you are trying to import and distribute engines to hobby shops) etc. Another big issue is service and parts. If a huge distributor like GReat Planes or Horizon has just a few lines of engines, they only have to have stock to repair those engines. If you have 3X as many brands you need the corresponding 3X number of spare parts and people who know how to service them. Probably another good reason they stick with a few rather than many. AJC

So what you are saying here is that Japanese CNC mills are more accurate than Chinese CNC mills?
Sorta like a Chevy Aveo is better than a Suzuki Swift, because it comes from and American company?

Ed has a point - I have not yet seen any Chinese made engine that is up to the quality of, say, OS which is MIJ. The fit and finish and attention to deatail is just about perfect.
However, many European and North American made engines are on par IMO. WHat this has to do with what we see in the hobby shops however eludes me... Take for example my Irvine .53 - which is one of the nicest made engines I have bought. It runs like a top (for 4 or 5 summers of use now in about 4 aircraft). It has survived numerous crashes and keeps on ticking, hand starts are generally on the 1st flip (no, really) and the idle is to die for. Yet, this quality British made engine has no major US distributer to my knowledge since SIG dropped the lineup. Unfortunate! To this day, I run the only red case Irvine in my entire zone that I am aware of. Thats a shame as they are every bit as good as what you do see in the shops. The same can be said for a lot of other engines. You don't see a lot of Jetts advertised in the model magazines now do you? How about Nelson's? Or Cyclons or Fora's or.... WHen Horizon decided to pick up the MDS line and market it in North AMerica they were suddenly seen almost everywhere. Now that they are no longer carried and you have to order them right from Russia - I doubt too many will be sold. It relaly has NO bearing on the quality at all when you think about it... At least thats my take. AJC

Well I say give China some time... I remmember back in the 60's-70's all the stuff coming out of Japan being refered to as "junk" (cars and motorcycles ect) ... And now look at it... that's all we want to buy now... And as Andrew said, If you have a big importer for your engines they will sell... I happen to like ENYA's but I have to order them from out of country now... It's too bad someone like Great Hobbies or Hobby Wholesale wouldn't take on some of these brands... That's how OS basically got its break , through Tower Hobbies/ Great Planes... Look at the line of engines Great Hobbies and Hobby Wholesale carries, they are distributed by Great planes and Horizon, that's it!!!
