UNOPENED...fuel has a shelf life of several years....but once you crack the seal and let air in the jug you can't expect more than a 6 month storage time....bad fuel can cost you big $$ in glow plugs.

I had a wee bit in a jug over the winter stored off the floor with the cap tight and it was bad...truck ran like poo....bought a new gallon and truck ran like a dream...
