"I think it's safe to say you should keep away from the Lanier Hawk or Slo-Comet."

Good one, Ron. Before I saw your post, I was going to tell Canadian K9 to contact Der Shark, to get his opinion.

My first plane was an LT-40 with an O.S. 46-FX up front, and it is still flying in spite of all the abuse I have put on it. It is still the plane I fly the most. The Avistar is definately an advanced trainer, but I have seen a considerable number of pilots learn with it as their first plane. I have owned two (down to one now) and for me, given my reaction time and eyesight, I would have been verychallenged to learn on it.

I prefer the slower moving, gentle planes when I am on the sticks, but can appreciate the quicker, snappier ones when someone else is flying them. (It's all up to your personal style and preference. )

Another great trainer, but it costs somewhat more, is the Kadet Senior ARF, with it's 80 inch wingspan, and it too will fly on a .40 (like a truck) I fly mine on a .60 and again I like the visibility, and and gentle spirit of this bird.

If you want just a plane that is one of the best trainers of all times you can now get the Goldburg Eagle 2 as an ARF. Assembly is very easy. Just install an engine and your radio gear and your all set for a fantastic learning experience. I learned to fly with the kit Eagle that I built myself and it was a sweetie to fly. I think you'll find that a lot of folks who have been around awhile learned to fly on an Eagle 2.

Just my opinion and another option for you. Amongst the group I was with when I first started my lessons was: "Nothing flies like an Eagle!"

I think some of the best advise you can take has been mentioned above. Search out a local club and see what they use mostly as trainers, one that they are most familiar with and go with that!
