Re: Boomerang Elan / Cheetah Build Thread by a Jet Noobie!!!

Just finished flight #4 of the day... flies like a dream

I'm in love with that turbine. If there's one piece of advice I'll give after 4 flights from a noobie jet-guy (LOL!!), it's to never skimp on the turbine size

Only one concern... the other day we watched Doug M beat on his Elan/P100 and noticed quite a bit of wing flex. I notice the same on mine - doesn't take much to get the wings to flex pretty noticeably, especially on KE circuits or pulling / pushing some G's. All this was done at say 1/2-3/4 throttle, so I wasn't even beating on it super hard.

Is this okay? Is this common?

june 22 trev. or the 23 as the rain day. we've got 70 more feet of field this year so lots of room for our turbines. cograts on becoming a turbine addict. can't wait to see the treasures that your skills will create. i'll keep you posted if there is any change to the dates.

Way to go Trevor! Glad to hear it all went well. 32#s must push that Elan up to the 190mph area and the verticals must be just wild.

Can't wait to see it in action.

Did the wings flex like this? See 2:52 on this video...

Just one little 25mm wing tube - not really even sure what kind of CF it's made of. The flex is common on larger turbines but I'm surprised to see you saw it with a P100.

The Torus has 2 wing tubes and does not flex but it also builds a lot heavier. Mine was 34lbs dry! (OK, I did have 170 and smoke system in it...)

I've never tried and don't know anyone who has but it would be interesting to try a better quality wing tube or an insert into the stock one.

I spite of all this, the only Boomer I have seen fail is Stevo's XL when the leading edge of the wing let go (at least thats what we thought it was as there was NOTHING left of the airframe) and his only had 28 lbs in it.

Re: Boomerang Elan / Cheetah Build Thread by a Jet Noobie!!!

Doug.... The wing bending was like that - perhaps a bit more . I've watched a bunch of videos last night, and it seems that wing flex is completely normal! WOOT!!!!!!!

Going back out this afternoon to see how much JetA1 we can burn

Thanks to everyone for all the help over the past few weeks!!

Re: Boomerang Elan / Cheetah Build Thread by a Jet Noobie!!!

Major bad news today

Had 2 good flights today and went up for a 3rd flight. Started into a fast dive at about 30 degrees - went to pull up and nothing - no elevator to pull up

It slammed into the ground at probably 160+ mph at a 30degree angle from about 200ft... Parts flew for a good 200+ feet. Complete write-off including the turbine I'll send it back to Jet Central, but it's mangled. Couldn't find the batteries, nose gear, 3 servos. Only a handful of things are salvageable

Root cause of no elevator control is still unknown?! Servos stopped working? Flutter that ripped the linkages off? Weak linkages?

Regardless... Time to start looking for a replacement, LOL

Jack and Gary... Please post pics of the carnage!!
