Treating any propellor (regardless of means of spinning it) as if it was a meat grinder, and moving cautiously around them, especially when spinning (the prop, not me), is what I had been lectured on all through my beginner days. Having none of my mentors reach through a diesel-powered 10x6 to adjust the needle valve and give himself a missing thumb-top and smiley faces across the fingers and palm really drove the lesson home.

Approach the prop from behind or exaggerate any reaches over the prop to ensure clearance.

If you have to adjust the screws, stop the engine, adjust and restart to check.

Ensure that there is a kill position (eg, full throttle back and full back trim) that abasolutely ensures the engine shuts down. An active kill switch for ignition-powered engines is also required. Never throw rags or anything into the prop to stop it.

Hold-downs and/or a helper are mandatory.

If in doubt, pack it in and take it home rather than trying to fiddle it right at the field.

Watch out for kibuttzers with lots of advise if you're having problems. Stick with one person who is knowledgable and you trust -- tell everyone else to please not help unless you ask for it. Be nice and polite.

Re: Lets keep safety in mind

I started glow engines for years and never had a problem. The first time I was ever cut with a prop was from an electric speed 400 motor when the speed control malfunctioned. Nasty little thing cut my finger to the bone. Point is, that it is not just big gassers that need respect. Keep your shirt tucked in when you use an edf, expect all tools and papers to be blown away with the prop blast, and just be aware of what you are doing and where you are (where your various parts are too).

Not just outdoor flying either, safety is very important for any indoor activity as well.

Re: Lets keep safety in mind

It was a boat that did that damage. A little misleading but certainly brings the safety issue upfront and center.

You can't believe everything you read on line but I guess we can assume it was a different kind of prop though.

Re: Lets keep safety in mind

Oh ya, on the subject of safety, some guy decided to kick a soccer ball around during our indoor heli flying time. That's was unreal. We kicked his a$$!

Re: Lets keep safety in mind

What are some of the safety issues you see around clubs and what can be done to help resolve them. If we see some unworhty plane or setup or even some undesired flying abilities that are totally unsafe, what should be our position and how should it be approach?
Should we have better trainning on equipment and the use of it. For example, how many check their batteries after each flight?
