Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario
Great idea for the float struts!
Just FYI, the amphib floats you got pics of are Wipline floats, chances are the ones of your kit are Edo's. there are amphib edo floats, however the struts will be slightly different, if you are going for scale purest detail! I can get you all the pics of straight edo's if you need any. The front gear on the edo's is a lot different than the wips, should be lots of pics on the net! Keep up the awesome build! |

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario
Thanks to the suggestion to have the rudders retractable on a separate servo (not linked to the gear retract), last night I fab'd up a hatch in the rear of the float which will fit whatever servo I'd like and will not need to be waterproof
I've now got access ports to all 3 sections of the float, so super easy for me to keep an eye on the water tightness of the float, LOL. Last edited by TBrum; 09-02-2014 at 07:18 AM. |

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario
Last night I also got the side sheeting laminated together with Express Wood glue at a 30deg scarf joint.

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario
And here's a few pictures of the this morning's adventures, LOL. The float is all sheeted
Still lots of sanding and blending of the edges to go (this is just a rough fab for now). once I get the other float to this stage, I'll glass them both and put on some scale detail and get them finished in white with KlassKote 2-part epoxy paint. |

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario
The plans say that the float package with amphibious gear should come in at 12lbs. So far the 1 float + retracts is just shy of 4lbs. I'd guess by the time I add some servos and glass/finish them, I'll be up around the 10lb mark.

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario
Tonight's project is to start making up the nose of the float.
Both Andy's and my float kits were missing all the I-Beam pieces for the second float. I called National Balsa and they have sent out the missing pieces. Once I get the box of wood I can start on the second float. Great Customer Service by National Balsa |

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario
Also - learning a lot about Wipline Floats (what I saw on that Beaver at Burlington Air) vs EDO (what's on the build table).
First 2 pictures are Wipline. Last 2 pictures are EDO. Big difference and from what I understand comes down to STC rating, load carrying and performance/handling preferences. Seems the preference on Beavers is EDO Seems to be a bit of personal preference which people like more but I'd love to hear more about the pros and cons of each!! Anyone have any info they can share??? From what I've seen, a new set of EDO's for a Cessna 182 seem to cost around $90k Way more for amphibious. |
