Where to get lead shot?

Hi,

I need to get some lead shot for balancing my Arado. Any suggestions where I can get it. I don't think hunting shops sell it anymore due to the law not allowing the use of lead shot anymore.

Cool Re: Where to get lead shot?

Lead Shot? No Idea.

But! Lead weights are easy to get at your local auto shop - it is used for balancing tires and there is always a large bucket of used lead waiting to go to the scrap dealer. MOST shops are happy to let you take a pound or two for free.

Then you can melt it down at home.

Personally I carve a mold into a piece of scrap wood and pour the molten lead in to form any shape that I need.

Good Luck.

I have maybe, 10 sealed bags of 20 pounds each, #7 shot.

I also have maybe 200 bricks of lead, weigh 1 pound each.

I don't think shipping would be cheap!

Good Luck.
Try and get a bit of refractory clay.
A little smear on the wood surface will stop it from burning.

It takes about 650-700 good degrees to melt wheel weights. It's not pure lead, it's an alloy of other elements.
Throw in a bit of hard wax, makes the dross and other sludge easier to skim off the surface.

I made all my 1 pound bricks in a cast iron ingot shaped mould.

Re: Where to get lead shot?

Lead shot is still made it can be used for hunting upland game. Try your local hunting shop. I think they only sell it in 5lb bags though.

Nope, , , it's a much larger bag I'm afraid. Try closer to 24 pounds.
I can't think of a gun shop in Canada that would dare open one of these up, just to re-package into a smaller size.
Unless someone might have given them a leftover.

Still got about 10 more bags of it!
My mistake, it's #8 shot.

Kind'a hard to find now-a-days.

I'd image around $40.00 a bag, if you can find it.

Chris, , , got your pm, , , sent you my number.

Re: Where to get lead shot?

If you are really keen on having shot to use as ballast, and I realise it is easier to get into range by adding small amounts as needed, you can make your own. Get some wheel weights, and melt them down, skim the clips, flux with beeswax to remove the last of the slag, and pour the molten metal into a 5 gallon pail of water (use a metal pail, if at all possible). The faster you pour the molten metal, the larger the shot will be, and the better your chances of melting a hole in your plastic pail. How do I know...guess.

It used to be quite common for reloading shot gun shells.
But now, most everything is gone to steel shot with a buffer type of powder mixed in. Our Government decided it was bad for the environment, water, etc.

It's used in a ton of places other than ammunition.

- Weigh scales
- Counter-balances
- Scotch tape dispensers
- Gymnasium equipment like weight belts, etc
- Melting down to make your own fishing tackle, etc

Some r/c applications

- Balancing our models
- Shaping aluminum on, , , works great!
- melting into small bricks, excellant for weighing down freshly glued wing skins.

I don't know about that.

Better stand 10 feet back using long tongs.
A molten 650-700 degrees does not take too kindly with water.

I've processed tons of wheel weight.
I actually had so much of it, I needed to rent a box trailer to take the surplus to the local recycler.
