Well, its been a long time since I watched that documentary, but I seem to recall that the plane was flown within the span of the documentary. After doing a bit of research on Google I found that Demart, when removing the wings during recovery from the Samoan jungle, had cut them from the fuselage, cutting through the spars. He then welded the spars back together, which is verbotten. A real shame, but it did fly, luckily no one was killed.

So, you are correct. Demart was a not-so-brilliant restorer afterall.
