I have an ASP .46 2-stroke. It runs pretty good. Good power. Pretty reliable.

Having said that if you want nitro it's probably worth spending the extra money on an OS or Saito.

I aquired an ASP .30 4 stroke that the seller said was in good condition, ready to go. It had zero compression due to bad valves! I touched up the valves, now it has low compression due to a bad cylinder/ring & won't start unless you spin it up with a starter.

On doing some research it seems the .30's are all like that!

Cheap is sometimes more expensive!

I still have a matched pair of 2-strokes 52's that I am trying to sell. Nothing really wrong with them other than touchy carbs. Just moving all over to 4-stroke.

The problems listed prior with peeling liners, air leaks and other issues are not limited to the ASP line and even OS suffered liner problems at one point. GMS, their TT PRO clones and others had front bearing air leaks, (along with the carb base seal) and the sealed bearing was only a band aid as the bearing size was relatively small and the real problem was clearance between the crank and case. Not much you could do there. In fact with GMS it was almost guaranteed they would quit in the air till you broke them in, then they simply would not shut down even with a completely closed carb barrel.

As for the 4-strokes, many look remarkably like OS, (Surprise!) but suffer from lower quality materials. A friend once had me look at why his new Magnum 52 had no compression. Physically it showed no real problems until the jewelers loupe indicated the valve faces looked like the back side of the Moon. No amount of polishing could seal them and fitting an old OS head got it back up and running again.

Here's my take: As with a lot of these Pac Rim motors you take your chances. Even appearances notwithstanding, as stated the materials and manufacturing quality can be much lower. Having said that, with care some can perform well and last quite a long time, (not so much with original bearings. Almost guarantee those need replacement VERY SOON!).

I bought an ASP .40 back in 96. Dual ball bearing with ABC. Ran really good, the only problem being unable to get it set up to shut down using the throttle controls. Not a powerhouse to be sure, but this particular engine was reliable.

Had this engine in my Skyward 40 trainer for over 150 flights. Pulled it for a TT.46 because the trainer was getting heavy because of crash repairs, and float installation.

I had no problems with my ASP, and would probably by another. Others have not been as fortuneate.

No kidding. They still run!

The .40 is now like the then new .32...
And the .32 is like a .25...

Had an ASP .61 ringed engine in a Super Hots back in the mid '90s. Ran great. Eventually wore out the ring so replaced the piston and sleeve with an ABC type. Ran great again. Eventually sold it.

Currently have an ASP 1.08 ABC in a Carl Goldberg Stuadacher. Runs great!

I have a asp .61 four stroke one of the best motors I have ever owned. I have had it for three years and three gallons of fuel still works great.

Have an ASP 75, stock carb would not let it run to potential. But in a Super tiger 2000 carb and it gose like heck. Many many gallons of fuel through it. So reliable that it was in my amphipian. Never stopped once.

These engines are very good but they like drinking nitro so if you are going to set one up have about a 1-2 oz bigger tank or don't make your flight's as long. If you do buy one buy it from Hobby King because they are alot cheaper than some other places (ebay)
