I don't know about MAAC, but AMA's insurance does cover the student.
The way I teach, it's almost impossible for my student to crash while I'm teaching him or her. I say, almost, because nothing is impossible. I can have anyone land on their very first ever RC flying experience, without even breaking a prop.

Re: Give RC flying a free try

MAAC used to cover students under the instructor's MAAC number as long as the student was under the direct supervision of the instructor. That was a few years ago I inquired, does anyone know for sure if it has changed?

I "kinda" remember reading that as long as your tethered through a buddy cord, in essence, we still have master control over the aircraft and our insurance still covers us for what our plane does. I will have to do a read through again to clarify, but I think it's there.

Re: Give RC flying a free try

My understanding of the MAAC policies is you can give someone ONE introductory flight and you are covered. If they intend to learn to fly then they are supposed to have their own MAAC Membership. Of course, a buddy box setup in required. In fact all clubs I have been affiliated with require the buddy box system for all instruction in their bylaws as well.

Are you serious? I had a bad experiance where the cord shorted out internally, frying both transmitters & causing a crash!

Haven't used a buddy box since!

Amen! The last time I used a buddy-box was over 40 years ago. Well, I did use a buddy-box when I was teaching two people at the same time. I was teaching two school teachers how to fly and teach at the same time.

Since I quit using the buddy-box I am now able to simply hand over the tx and not have to take it back at all. Everyone I hand the tx to is able to have total control and within a few minutes and with minimal assistance from me, takeoff, fly very smoothly, not even come close to crashing and land on their very first ever flying experience. I offered to show other experienced fliers, some were instructors who use the buddy-box how to do this, but they showed no interest whatsoever. I firmly believe I could teach others how to do this within an hour, but it seems that no one wants to learn a much easier, faster, safer and more fun way to teach RC flying. I use the same method promoting/instructing people to fly helicopters.

I am and always have been willing to show and teach anyone who's interested. Using my equipment, and all for the love of the hobby/sport. A lot of folks in my area talk a good game, but as they say, talk is cheap. BTW, all I get is grief from local club members and some folks on related forums. Can't believe it. These are the same folks who come up with all the alleged "reasons" particpation in the hobby/sport is in decline. Like the economy, computer games, instant gratification society, etc. If finding someone to teach you is extremely difficult, people aren't going to get into the hobby/sport. No, it's Lockport, NY USA

I've had several contacts from your side of the border, but unfortunately, the weather fails to cooperate.

Does MAAC offer anything like AMA's T.A.G. program?
