Re: Home made indoor Piper Cub 41" wingspan 74gm's build thread

The motor I used is a 5gm brushless and a spectrum rec. With built-in speed control 2 cell setup 200ma polymer battery.
It was first used with a 1 cell battery and receiver setup but it was just enough to fly.
There is some good choices with 1 cell geared brushed motors, to use.
The e- flite 180 brushless 2 cell is a good choice too.
And is what I'm going to use for this build.

Re: Home made indoor Piper Cub 41" wingspan 74gm's build thread

Will start building Saturday, wing frame leading edge 3/16×3/16 balsa strong grade, minor warps are OK 1/4" over 17" can be used in favor for dihedral. Trailing edge 1/8×1/4 same deal for warps. Ribs are made from 1/32 or 1/16 balsa sheet cut to shape using a template. I will send a picture showing dimensions for rib on a grid layout.
Note wing is held on with magnets.

Re: Home made indoor Piper Cub 41" wingspan 74gm's build thread

Here's how the ribs are cut out, very easy one after another, approximately 3/16 high.
Using the hardwood template.

Keep in mind each rib is sanded to length to fit, we're talking 1/32" - 1/8"

Horizontal lines on the grid are 1/8 apart, the vertical lines are 3/8 apart.
Use intersection points from the top of the rib to make your template.
Don't be too concerned about it being perfect.

Re: Home made indoor Piper Cub 41" wingspan 74gm's build thread

There's 20 ribs to make up the wing, leading and trailing edge are 17" long per side, ribs are spaced just under 2". Inboard rib is glued in after the two wing halfs are joined. Note there is a 2" wide center section of wing. The wing is built with washout.
Building will be shown in my next post.

Great slow flight and neat balsa, tissue and a bit of high tech materials (magnets and looks like carbon fiber struts).... definitely interested in building one

Re: Home made indoor Piper Cub 41" wingspan 74gm's build thread

Did some experimenting with motor thrust measurement, Using a 100gram spring scale clipped on the rudder I can compare the thrust.
The 5gm motor on my Cub is putting out 40grams The E-flite 180 which you find om the UMX Gee Bee or Beast puts out over 90 grams of thrust, making it a Great choice. it's 8grams, well worth the 3 extra grams.
This is some good insensitive to get this build done, over twice the thrust.

So this is what I'll be using for this build, note they are 2 cell.
So if you have a banged up Gee Bee or any other plane with a 2 cell cell brushless motor that's what I recommend. If your going to buy the guts make sure it has the built in brushless speed control and two servos on one board.
