Thanks Max. I'll try to see if he will be okay with electric instead of motor for my first plane. I have enough room in my backyard to fly gas planes (as I live in the country) but I think my neighbors would prefer electric.

Re: First Plane

I also live in a rural area with lots of room behind the houses built along the road, and noise was a major consideration. Way back when I first built here there weren't many homes along the road so I flew without disturbing anyone. Like everyone instructors will have preferences in planes for different reasons, but one that might be important is the condition of the runway. It seems that most of the trainers I look up have tricycle landing gear, but I much prefer a tail dragger set up & I'm likely to convert my Apprentice & Alpha over the winter. Do you know the instructor's name? I know at least one of them at that club, but I may know others but not know they serve as instructors.

Re: First Plane

I've been talking to Dave although I don't know if he'll end up being my instructor or not.

Re: First Plane

I just read the "training" page of their web site & Dave may very well be your instructor. Looks like they recommend the Alpha too, (which I have as an electric but haven't flown yet.) Talk things over with him & if he thinks glow is the way to go I'd take that advice. I've spent enough time around him to respect his opinion enough to do what's suggested.
Now since you're starting from scratch discuss the transmitter differences too. The Nexstar comes with a Futaba 72 Mhz Tx (according to the club's site, but that might be old info) while the Alpha comes with a 2.4 Ghz spread specktrum radio, which many clubs like because they don't need to worry about frequency conflicts. There is a chance the Futaba may have been replaced by a 2.4 radio but I haven't seen any mention of it so far. The down side to the Alpha is that you don't get any form of sim with it.

Re: First Plane

Whatever gets me started right. If I buy a transmitter separately that's fine too but I don't want to spend $600.00 right off the bat. Hopefully he'll understand my position.

Re: First Plane

I'm quite sure he'll understand the financial side of this, and that he's had to help many others get the most for their money and without loosing sight of the goal. As long as you know the things to discuss (make notes) you'll get along great; it's a part of the mentoring.

Re: First Plane

I've come across the interesting and similar world of micro RCs. Does anyone here have ideas or tips for micro RCs? Can you use a "normal" glow powered planes transmitter with them?

The idea of flying in my room is a neat one. I have a fairly large room and would love to try to zoom around with a plane.

Re: First Plane

Thanks. Hector is coming over this week to talk and show me one of his planes. I'll look at that again if I decide to go that route.
