Back to the 70's - Bridi Kaos / Chaos

Thought I'd post my current project, a Bluejay models Killer Chaos 60. The Kaos, designed by Joe Bridi around 1970 was one of the most popular sport-pattern designs ever, and spun off dozens of different sizes and variations. This one is a tail-dragger with a side-mounted engine. I wanted to keep things simple, with a 61 2-stroke, no tuned pipe and no retracts, although both could be added if you really want to bore holes in the sky.

The kit is quite nice, with machine-cut parts and laser-cut wing ribs with holes for a wing jig. I made myself a jig from hardwood strips I got at Rona and 1/4" wire rods from the K&S bin at my LHS. Well worth the time to make, as it made building this symmetrical, double-tapered wing a lot easier, and arrow straight as well. It's definitely an old-school design, with no interlocking parts and a fair bit of balsa to sand, but it's pretty simple to build, and light, too.

more to come...

Re: Back to the 70's - Bridi Kaos / Chaos

That's a great plane with a lot of history. It's also nice to see another altogether too rare builder at work, as well.

Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Great sport pattern airrplane, had a few in the 70's. Still have a Bridi Super Koas kit {GP's} in the storage rack. As well as a NIB K&B 61.
Maybe some day will get it built.

Re: Back to the 70's - Bridi Kaos / Chaos

The Kaos .60 was a very good plane back in the day --- and still is , ---- had 2 of them over the years !!!!

I have a set of full size plan's for the .90 - 120 size, that i should build some day.

Span ---- 73.5 in
Area ---- 1002 sq. in.
Lenght -- 69 in.
Weight -- 10 -11.5 lbs.

With the new Gas Motors now a DLE - 20 would just work great !!!

Re: Back to the 70's - Bridi Kaos / Chaos

Thanks for the interest, guys. Here's a few more details...

As I said earlier, there is some balsa to shape and sand. The wingtips are square blocks that you make into streamlined tips. The instructions say to hollow them out as well for weight savings. Does anyone make a melon-baller for balsa?

In keeping with the 70's theme, I got a pair of Kraft wheels for it (thanks Dennis). All the pattern ships back then had them. The tires are solid rubber, so they're a bit heavier than average, but should be durable.

The engine is a brand-new HP 61 Gold Cup ABC. It's a beautiful engine, and fairly light for a ball-bearing 61. It also has a slide-valve carb instead of the usual rotating barrel type. The muffler is a simple expansion type with no internal baffles but very light. It may be a bit loud for my flying site, so I also got a Bisson low-dB muffler for it as well.

I also got a gold-anodized Tru-Turn spinner. I was hoping for a better colour match with the engine head, but can't control that...

Starting to cover it now...

Re: Back to the 70's - Bridi Kaos / Chaos

Wow you have it all covered right down to the wheels. Those Kraft wheels were the best ever made in my opinion.
The model will just look excellent finished up with all the vintage accessories including the engine.
Fabric and paint +1...... monokote

Good luck with your build!

Bill

ps. do you have a colour scheme in mind?
