C.H. Ignition On LiPo Battery

I am using a 7.4 volt 1800 mah LiPo to supply a Castle Creations 10 amp BEC that is then supplying the C.H. ignition on my Brison 2.4. The BEC is set at 5 volts.

The main reason for this was one of space in the cowl, the battery won't self discharge as much, and the whole thing weights a bunch less.

Does anyone see any problems with this set up. Anyone else used LiPo batteries in this type of set up.

Reading on the internet it seems 6 volts is on the high side so hooking up a fresh 7.4 LiPo seemed a bit risky. Being the start of the flying season I don't want to cook the C.H. The last one I set in took ages to come back.

Thanks for any input offered.

Re: C.H. Ignition On LiPo Battery

I would go with a 5 volt regulater as they reccomend a 4 cell pack . I think if the voltage is higher the components may not take the extra voltage after a while and end up with a shorter life. I am talking about the transformer and the scr which are the weak spots. You may also get some engine miss while running if the spark jumps the gap on the scr to ground. On my homebrew I had to increase the gap on the board because of that reason.

Re: C.H. Ignition On LiPo Battery

I guess I have answered my question.

I flew the C.H. equiped Brison 2.4 with the 7.4 LiPo and the CC 10amp BEC. I works like a charm! The top end ~7400 RPM was solid.

Best of all I haven't charged the battery for two weeks and it still is reading 8.2 volts. Gota like LiPos and there ability to hold a charge!!!

Thanks all for looking....

Re: C.H. Ignition On LiPo Battery

Actually CH suggests using a signle-cell lipo and, of course, no regulator with his ignition. He says a single cell is plenty of voltage for a good hot spark. Furthermore, he says you'll know when it's time to recharge because the engine will start to misfire at high RPM, but shouldn't quit (unlike with a regulated 2-cell). I haven't tried it myself, but I will. Just imagine the weight savings.
