Cool until the pilot is blinded and has to ditch.

Re: fireworks on airplanes?

At risk of starting a "flame fest."

And until such time as MAAC and our insurance carrier decide differently.

From the current MAAC Safety Code:

Section 1.5

5. I shall not operate a Model carrying, or with the intent to activate, Pyrotechnic and/or explosive devices;

Cheers,
Tom

Re: fireworks on airplanes?

I personally think it's a further accident waiting to happen, what form of pyro are they allowing? Surely it can't be fireworks that will be launched from the airplane in anyway can it? Is it just sparklers that are fixed to the airplane? Lights are fine, and with proper fire suppression I don't have a problem with a fixed effect, but if it's Pyro or fireworks that launch from the airplane I think it's ridiculous and I can't believe the AMA would sanction it.

Re: fireworks on airplanes?

I'd go see something like that in a second. Sounds like a blast.

Sure, there are safety rules and I'm sure fire codes to be followed but dam, that would be cool to see.

People blast off model rockets, pyrotechnics, and fireworks every day, so why not at a moderated show.

Because you have more control of the trajectory with a model rocket, pyrotechnics and fireworks when set up properly. If you're blasting a rocket or firework off of an airplane, who is to say that it won't accidentally fire while pointed at a crowd, or that it won't get hung up on a wing and not launch and cause an out of control issue with the thrust?
This is why I say if it's a fixed pyro effect (something that will burn and sparkle without any thrust generated) I could live with it, it wouldn't really be anymore dangerous than an internal combustion engine or lipo battery pack with the possible exception of lack of visual clarity. Besides, you know as well as I do, once it's done once at an event, it's only a matter of time before idiots start to do it because it's now accepted and an accident will occur.

This type of activity is a perfect candidate for a great quote; "Stupid is as stupid does"
NOT a good idea, no matter how "cool" it would look. My $.02

Re: fireworks on airplanes?

Jeremy. Ya, yes I agree with you on some aspects. I do. But the flip side is this. As a guy that used to fire off rockets on a very regular basis, these things, when firmly planted on there launch pad can and will go wild from time to time. Granted when I was doing this, I was 10 or 12 and on the farm, so the people factor is at a minimum (and the people factor is one of the points I agree with you on) but, its like anything else. It has to be done right or not at all. The thing is that some idiot will go wrong with it, but the truth about that is that there isn't a thing in the world that will stop that. There's idiots that fly turbines Jeremy, you know that as well as I do. There's idiots with firearms, there idiots with cars. I say, we gotta enjoy what we can and we can only make the rules for the stupidest people out there. Weather they are followed or not, is another story.

Dale

Re: fireworks on airplanes?

Looks cool, sorry but I think it's stupid, great way to get our hobby even further regulated and that's just what we need.
