Cold weather storage for planes
We are currently in the process of selling our house. I was wondering if it is possible to store my planes in an unheated garage. We have hit the -20's in this part of the country. Most of the houses we have seen will give me a building room, just no storage indoors. Anyone out there have experience in this?

I think you have to worry more about the humidity factor. The up and down of humidity while in storage might cause some warpage that might be a little more controlled inside a house.

HI
I have all my stuff in the Garage. I picked up a small electric fireplace at Sears fo $85 with a thermstat control. Set the thermestat to a set temp and leve it on. Takes care of the humidity as well. Works fine for 2 yrs now Pat |

Never had a problem yet with cold storage, no matter how cold.
I take out batteries though since they don't last long without good care, such as charging and cycling. While everything is stored, it does not get touched or moved, lest its being somehwat brittle causes problems. |

Re: Cold weather storage for planes
Hi Art,
I've had no problems for years storing planes in the cold in an unheated shed. I just take the Rx packs out of them, and keep them with my Tx in the 'warm'. My engines get ATF'd (AutomaticTransmissionFluid) and I seal the tanks with fuel tubing to keep them from drying out. Any 'heatshrink' covering might need a touch up now and again, but I'm generally good to go... Actually, I get more problems with them in the same shed in hot/humid weather ! Another topic ! Re: Cold weather storage for planes
Actually one of your biggest concerns is not the cold but the 'Critters'.
If you are using an outdoor shed mice are a major problem, they like small places to nest and they can chew into balsa wood for nesting material quite easily. Add to that the incontinance of the mice and once they get into a model - it is a write off. Make sure that the shed / garage / storage room is as secure as possible, set up bait traps to minimize the risk and you should be OK - but beware... they are persistant. Good Luck!

I store ALL my rc gear in my shed built expressly for that purpose. It gets to -40 here regularly and for extended periods (like all of January this year!). Never had any issues in 10 yrs. But it is dry here, if it was damp I would wrap my engines with oily rags or use something like boesheild to prevent any chance of corrosion. As for the planes themselves, dont worry. Nothing going to happen to them! AJC
