This is why tracks are not a viable stand alone business in Ontario. Too much overhead, start up costs, too short a season and too few participants in the hobby. The only tracks that can survive are ones that don't have to pay rent (ie: Sprucewood, Hardcore, Niagara, Sid's). They are basically side businesses and probably cash businesses at that! Build it and they may come sure....it's just how often will they come?

The only other way to play might be to run a semi-private operation. Sell season's passes good for unlimited use and then hit the casual (1-time) users really hard in the wallet. That way if the "regulars" (the bulk of users) don't put their $$$ upfront in support of the upcoming season you simply keep the gates closed and issue refunds until the mindset changes.

Seems like a lot of people here are confusing hobbies and business. Bashing, racing at a track is a hobby. Opening your own track, investing time, effort, money... that's a business. This is NOT a failure of "the community" or "the hobby", it is a VERY unfortunate failure of one mans business. PERIOD. Nobody, not one person besides Teff and his business associates is responsible for this. (no offense to Teff or his team, really no offense, I feel for you but I'm frustrated by some of the things being said here). This track is not closing because a bunch of online goonies failed to pay or didn't show up. The track is closing because the business plan/model didn't work. I could go on about business, but I'm not an "expert" and don't really care to elaborate or pretend to know things I don't. Personally, I rarely race. When I do, it's in Peterborough as that is the closest track for me to get to. I am saddened by the news that #5 is closing as it always seemed to me like it was a serious, up-and-coming track. Worse than this, I am offended by the implication here that the ORRC community in general has any ownership in this unfortunate announcement. All the best to you Teff, I hope you can figure out a way to make it work and look forward to making it up there some day. |

sorry to hear that ron, it's sad to hear of any business struggling but i said it before, everyone can't have a track in there backyard...cause all you will do is fight for racers and divide the rc community!!! one thing i don't understand, if you spent 55k on just permits and then the rest....how the heck were you planning on turning a profit there? the way i figure at what we take in at our track....you wouldn't see your investment back for at least 5 years or better
ron, imho... i really think your heart was in the right place but it doesn't seem to well thought out we wish you better luck for next year and we will see you at your glorcs race |
