Nova Scotia Eurocopter EC 665 Tiger Heliartist Build

The Tiger is my favorite Phoenix flight sim model, especially when you expand it to maximum size - what can I tell you - it was an obvious next project when these came out on the market from Heliartist recently. 600 size Trex mechanics.

The box is enormous. 16x16x55 inches and 25lbs. The tiger ends up at 65 inches long (1.7 meters). The cockpit is nearly as long as a 450! There were lots of bags and parts with this one that I have not opened up yet. Nothing damaged. Looks good coming out of the box.

An overview of the full size attack helicopter is here;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurocopter_Tiger

The addiction continues - this one is going to take a while!

Lots of thinking to do on color scheme and markings and the rotor head and tail rotor assemblies.

Should be a cool looking bird when finished.

This years winter project for me will be transplanting a Trex 700 FBL into ....a cool BELL 222 Fuse with retracts and lights...

Eurocopter EC 665 Tiger Mechanics

The donor 600ESP arrived in excellent shape through a RC Canada classified purchase. Thanks Bell Chan (!) for the mechanics that have since been stripped and readied for the EC665.

My plan was to have the body painted, acquire a 4 blade head and 3 blade tail , change out the motor and ESC to get the head speed down, etc... Reality set in and a discussion with Travis Roma who painted Wairwolf reset the plan (paint it when? are you serious?). Now my hope is to have this together and flying with stock mechanics and paint for the war bird rally at the end of June - well maybe . Next winter take it apart and do the paint and mechanics upgrades.

The change over to the new frames went fairly smoothly. All parts have been cleaned up, replaced as necessary, and loctited in the new frame. The frames are carbon fiber and very accurate. They basically condense the 600 mechanics
into less space. The forward servos and battery tray move backward slightly and the boom moves down.

Challenges I ran into so far are minor. The bearings in the umbrella gear adapter were not pressed fit and fell out with very little pressure applied. I ended up using a little of the green Loctite product that comes with every Align kit and never used. It is essentially glue. The bearing should not move.

The East Coast Helicopter Contest and Fun Fly is this weekend and I have been practicing (not to win anything, it’s not pretty, but to try not to embarrass myself to badly) so not getting much building time. Also working with others to get the MAAC Blades Program up and running here. Next week!

Eurocopter EC 665 Tiger Mechanics continued

An unfortunate unscheduled inverted landing with the 550 at the East Coast Heli Fun Fly on the weekend has slowed progress somewhat, but back on track now.

A lot of the work I am doing surrounds cleaning up the donor mechanics, lube and lock - general stuff as I do the transfer of parts. The tail on the this machine is very long now and gets in the way a bit - not a bad problem to have.

The boom, supports, and tail gear box went together well. I have yet to run the push rods to the tail as I have not yet decided to replace the tail slider which is not as smooth as I would like despite a significant cleaning and lubrication effort.

Nothing major stands out as short comings with the kit/process so far. The auto rotation gear is a bit of challenge to get in and out - it is a very tight fit but does go in with a little effort.

The tail gear box is much more rugged than the CH135 (Trex 500 Heliartist UH1) assembly and appears very strong.

Servos to go in next and then secure a few pieces I have left to last.

Re: Eurocopter EC 665 Tiger Mechanics continued

Hi Jeremy
You may have convinced me to go electric. There is much more to choose from in scale kits for electric and Heliartist seem to be nice kits.
The tiger is a good looking helicopter and will be a great scale model. Where do you order them from and how is shipping
Thanks
Mike
