Don Smith 1/6th Mosquito builds

Couple of us are looking to build a larger Mosquito than the Brian Taylor 81", so looking at the Don Smith Plans 120" Mossie. If a couple more are interested, then I can order the plans, and cost out a few short kits for this baby. Currently have done four 1/5 Hawker Hurricane kits, with four more in the works. Have a couple of 1/5th Typhoons to do after that, then some Ziroli B-25s. Timeframe to start cutting the Mosquito's would be late March.

I've ordered the 124"Brian Taylor plans. They are enlarged from the Brian Taylor 71"Mosquito, which isn't quite as detailed as the 81"plans that I have, however, it's far superior than the Don Smith plans, from what I've been told. I have a ton of Mosquito data, super scale plastic kit, etc, so think I can come up with a pretty decent Mossie. For those considering short kits, I'd highly recommend ordering the 81"span Mossie plans, along with the 124"plans. Not sure why Bob doesn't advertise the 124" plans, but he does have them!

Re: Don Smith Mosquito short kits

Sad news, the German company only does ready to cover models of the Mosquito. They don't even have plans, it's all built from 3 views! Yikes, those germans are good. So, it will have to be Don Smith plans, using the Brian Taylor plans to correct any issues. Now just need Precision Cut kits to confirm my plans order. . . . .

Re: Don Smith Mosquito short kits

True enough. I want the B-25 plans to get here soon, they've been on order a while as well. Not like I don't have tons to do, I did take a quick break last night, and built the motor mount plates for my G38 to fit on the Hurricane.

Re: Don Smith Mosquito short kits

Definitely going to have to go over those DS plans with a fine toothed comb Dave. I've seen lots of issues posted about his plans (on another forum). One guy was 2/3 the way through an He-51 biplane and gave up because there were so many issues!!

Found this, might help you would-be builders:

(Yes, there is a membership fee for the forum, but the info you get from this forum far out weighs the cost.)

Re: Don Smith Mosquito short kits

I will, my dad was an aeronautical engineer, we spent a lot of time together doing planes, and he helped me through building two experimental homebuilts. Both flew, and are still flying, so we must have done it right! lol When it comes to plans, you can make a silk purse from a sow's ear, just takes more work!

Re: Don Smith Mosquito short kits

Good luck to you! After reading through 2/3 of that Mosquito thread on RCSB it looks like those Don Smith plans have a lot of issues.

don't know if you saw this:

http://www.sparclaser.com.au/sparc_a...catalogue.html

About 1/3 the way down the page, they have a 124" kit based on the Brian Taylor 81" plans (Which are much more scale & better quality) They have the link for the plans (not sure if they are 81 or 124") Might want to contact them about the plans if the DS plans are as bad as they say.

Re: Don Smith Mosquito short kits

Yeah, they've computer enlarged the plans for cutting the kits, but to buy the plans, they refer you to traplet, which only sells the 81" Mossie Plans. I will literally redraw the entire plan set if I have to, build, test-fly, and then I'll keep them all to myself, and no one else on the planet will have a big Mossie! lol No, I'll share all with everyone.
