I just picked up a JR S400 buddy box to go with my JR X9303 and noticed that the dual rates are not transferred to the buddy box. The S400 is a simple 4 ch radio with no travel adjust, so the buddy box controls move the servos further than the master radio. is this normal and should I adjust the planes throws to mach the buddy box. thanks

I can tell you that for Futaba its the functions of the buddy-box that applies when the buddy-box is in use through the master. Its' probable that JR works the same way...whatever the buddy-box has is all that the student has.

It is normal. It is the same with the trims. Just because the "main" control is trimmed it doesn't mean that the buddy box will be trimmed as well.

You have to set them up separately that includes, throws, dual rates, flight conditions switch assignment etc.

Hey Karl- what you are describing is what in JR terms is called "P-Link" aka "Pilot Link"

That feature is relatively new, where the rates, travel adjustment, expo (and even digital trims) are controlled by the master TX and all the slave TX does is control the basic flight functions. This feature is enabled in the setup menu by selecting the type of trainer mode desired, "Normal" or "P-link"

UNFORTUNATELY, this is only available on the newer radios. So if you have an older radio that does not have P-link, the 2 radios each have to be configured separately. If the Buddy box radio does not have dual rates programming, you are SOL.

I looked up the manual for the 9303 and I have some bad news for you- the radio does not appear to have a P-link feature, meaning each radio will have to be configured separately. I may be wrong though, because all I could find are the heli version (which describes the trainer set up but does not appear to have any reference to P-link in the manual) and the glider version (Couldn't find it at all there, at least not on the online manual..they show the trainer button and the menu screen, but there was no chapter on programming the trainer mode...go figure...) so it's best you check it yourself.

I suggest you take your radio and Enter the configuration screen (the mode that allows you to change your model number and also has a setup screen for enabling trainer mode) and go to the trainer mode feature and see if you have the P-link feature. If so, turn it on... If not.. , you will need a programmable radio for the buddy box radio OR, you might want to mechanically adjust the linkages so that 100% travel on the master (and slave) give you the desired rates.

It's not that big of deal for me. It just means more set up time adjusting the servo/control surface linkages for a mild throw when activated by the buddy box and set up the master TX accordingly.

Ok, Now that you posted a photo of your pparticular model, I was able to search for the proper manual (al the ones I originally got for a 9303 shearch on the JR site only had manuals for the older 72mhz version.

The new manual states:

TRAINER – TRAINER SYSTEM
XP9303 USED AS MASTER (INSTRUCTOR) – (Trainer System)

The X9303 2.4 contains a Trainer System that allows the
instructor to transfer some or all of the primary flight
control functions (Throttle, Aileron, Elevator and Rudder)
to the student. It also allows for indicating if the transmitter
is to be the Master (controlled by the instructor) or Slave
(controlled by the student). The Snap Roll button is used
to transfer control to the student when the X9303 2.4 is
being used as the Master/Instructor transmitter.
All Dual rates and Exponential settings in the Master
transmitter are transferred to the Slave transmitter. The
Slave transmitter battery must be charged.
1. Connect the Trainer cord between the Master and
Slave transmitters. Turn the power on to the Master
transmitter (the Slave transmitter remains powered off
and can even have the module removed).
2. Make sure the Slave transmitter is in the PPM/FM
modulation mode. If the slave system is a X9303 2.4,
or any other system that is Spread Spectrum only,
such as other JR 2.4GHz systems or Spektrum brand
systems, this does not apply.
3. Highlight and select Trainer in the FUNC.LIST to
obtain the Trainer Display.

So according to this, you should be able to transfer all the dual rate settings to the slave...Hmmmm...

Ok I figured it out.

On the master TX, you set the trainer setting to Program T (slave). I had them set in master (normal).

Also I was told that the buddy box did NOT need a battery to work, but it does.

Glad to hear you got it sorted.

Someone gave you some mis-information ; Futaba radios do not need a battery, JR's Do.

Now that you figured out that your Slave needs a battery, If you don't have a spare TX battery for the slave, try what we do at for our club's JR buddy Boxes:
Put a 9V connector on the buddy box radio (some already come in that style, others do not) and just plug in a 9V battery.

The Slave TX does not output an RF signal when used in the buddy box mode so power consumption is next to nothing. A 9V battery would last us all summer. When you use a 9V battery, disregard the low battery lights on the Slave RX, you can operate it as a slave right until it goes dead.
