The Lighter Side of Scale Building
So far, in my builds, I have documented the start to finish process but when the build is so fast and with so little to actually build, pictures get left until it is finished. A few years ago, I bought an Align Police 500E body kit for one of my two 250's. I did get a lot of flying in with the 500 and the other 250 sat for the most part. I must have over a hundred flights with the 500 and maybe 20 with the stock 250. I bought a second body when they were on sale (I am going to get another one as a spare again) and knew that one day, the minor dings and dents would be too much to look at and I would slip it into the new body.
During the Christmas break, our club hosted an indoor fly-in at a golf dome and there, within a matter of minutes, I managed to deck three helicopters, the 500, 250SE, and a BO-105 that made a beautiful rainbow trajectory from take-off to crash with no input from me, sigh. These sat and after our second fly-in at the dome, it was time to repair the two 250's. The BO-105 was easy, I just bought another one as I figured the board was gone and it was easier to buy a brand new one and part the old one out. The first 250SE needed all shafts replaced plus a couple of small parts to get it back up and running. The 500 needed the new body, all shafts, a new one way bearing, and the pinion re-installed. This time out, I decided to leave the struts full length but the angle was terrible when installed. I slotted the four points towards the middle by 3/16ths to 1/4" which allowed the struts to splay out to a more realistic angle. The angle might have been close to correct for a flying 500 but for one that spends most of its time on the desk, it looks like a clown on stilts. Now, it looks more like a much larger helicopter and if I can make a suggestion to all that own these bodies, paint the skid tubes to match the struts. It makes the biggest improvement to the body more than any other change. I am posting some pictures of the old setup so you can see the change the struts made to the overall looks. The lights swapped out from one body to the other and no changes were made from its last setup. The first pictures do not show the horizontal tail light I added about a year ago but the new one has it in place. Take care. Don |

Re: The Lighter Side of Scale Building
As Always it looks fantastic.
I also have 2 250's and every holiday weekend my mouse hovers over those bodies on the rotorquest website maybe in May I will click. Do you think it would work with the DFC version? the head is much shorter and I worry a bit like clearance. my flybared 250 was my first real heli build so I have this desire to leave it stock. please keep the builds and pictures coming. Re: The Lighter Side of Scale Building
Thanks. It should clear with no problems as both use the same main shaft. The DFC head will be closer to the doghouse but not as close as my flybar. The one thing I would change is to rework the elevator servo to be inside the chassis as it does hit the body and that might be a source of the vibration I am getting, too. Have fun.

Re: The Lighter Side of Scale Building
That looks pretty darned good for a 250.
Any pictures of the BO-105? What was the mechanics for the BO-105? Blade 130?

Re: The Lighter Side of Scale Building
Hi Max:
I don't have any pictures of the BO-105 as it was just stock out of the box from Horizon, lol. Nothing special at all. Well, I did reform the landing gear and paint them white, which I can't understand a company making such a huge error when the rest of the body is fairly well detailed. Take care. Don |

Re: The Lighter Side of Scale Building
Yes, it was the Blade BO-105 CB 130X (I swear they are made by the same company that makes the Heli-Max UH-60). Here are a couple of pictures as I had never worried about taking pictures of it as I didn't consider it a build. They're everywhere, lol. I must have seen a half dozen in Crowley and one seller had them for a hundred bucks. They didn't last at all and one went to England. Take care.
