Re: Can I cut my ant.

I wouldn't do it ...... If I remember correctly one of the major antenna's perfromance configuration spec's is its length in proportion to the wavelength of the frequency it is meant to receive ..... hope someone can explain it better ..... My AARL handbook was printed in 1997 .... there's been a lot of improvements and change since then ...

Re: Can I cut my ant.

The antenna is part of the tuned circuit of the receiver. Cutting the antenna in half will not only reduce the signal catching capability in half but will also detune the input circuit of the receiver. Your range will be severely shortened.

Re: Can I cut my ant.

I have a bobbin here to wrap the antennae to shorten it or you can use a base loaded one to have a shorter antennae

Re: Can I cut my ant.

Most instructions say not to cut the receiver antenna. I am guessing that it is for a smaller aircraft. The 72MHZ hitec receivers came with a small card to wrap the antenna around to shorten the length. I have also tried wrapping it around a 1/4" nylon tube, try a soda straw. The maximum I could wrap was about 1/3 rd. without loosing a lot of range. Most hobby shops sell base loaded replacement antennas for use on cars and boats. Keep the wrapped part of your antenna as far away from any wires or batteries as you can. My boat has 13" sticking up and the rest is wrapped around a tube at the base. My antenna collapsed range was over 600'. If the unit you are putting it in is electric, that could cause interference. They create a giant magnetic field. The worst thing you could do is let it trail and snap in the wind. Wrap it and do a range check with everything turned on.

Re: Can I cut my ant.

I would imagine they are still out there, but when I flew helicopters years ago, there were short, whip antennas that you could get. You cut the original wire down to about 4 inches and soldered on to the new whip which was about 7-8 inches in length.

Re: Can I cut my ant.

Had the wire inside my antenna break, only got about 300feet range, was lucky to recover aircraft, lucky it turned by itself towards me and regained enough control to crash land nearby.
