Thanks for the info! I'm actually now considering 12s instead. I don't know if my motor will handle it, so I may upgrade that to a 6000w also.

All I have to do is sell my 4 new 5s packs when they get here.

EDIT: I'm sticking with my 10s setup for now. I just realized that my new charger won't handle 12s, so charging would suck! I'm sure it'll do well enough for me. I won't be able to compete this season anyway.

Re: 78" Extra 330L - Electric Project!

There are very few options for charging 12s packs (as a single pack, not two 6s)....Schulze's can do it, and I think one of the big Hyperions can (as two 6s on the same charger), but its slim picking. Thunder Power is going to be discontinuing the 1010 and replacing it with a 1210 for just that reason.

No you motor would not handle 12s.....its a big leap from 10s to 12s.

That's kind of what I figured.

It's all a learning process, which is great in itself.

Re: 78" Extra 330L - Electric Project!

Alright, on to the actual project! Got my servo's today and installed them! Servos are Hitec HS-7955TGs all around. The install went fairly smoothly, but I did have a bit of a time getting the cables for the pull-pull elevator setup to trim up. It's all sorted out now, but it was a bit of a struggle, as things usually are when you've never dealt with that sort of thing!

I'm surprised to see you write this, Chad. If one believes the published specs on this motor (Turnigy SK 63-64) then on 12S and pulling 80A it would still be operating at 90% efficiency. I would agree that it would not be a good candidate for this plane, considering WOT prop speed will be in the 8900 to 9500 RPM range (depending how large a prop is on it) and power output on 12S would be in the 3000w range

Anyway, my calc's suggest that when propped to draw peak efficiency amps at 25% throttle, and limiting prop speeds to 7000 rpm to reduce tip noise, 10S is ideal. It would be propped to draw 80A static and be operating at 89% efficiency (although it may not be possible to fit a big enough prop to draw that current on this airframe - we're talking 20x10).

Re: 78" Extra 330L - Electric Project!

Its too high kV for 12s to run any real useful prop, you can run it on 12s sure, but with a 17" prop.

The large Turnigy's are not known for reliability, there have been some using this motor in pattern but they don't last all that long, mostly bearing issues....and more rpm (higher cell count) will aggravate poor bearings.

Fair enough. And good to know about the bearings. It makes sense that low cost motors use low cost parts.

Good thing I used to be sponsored by Boca Bearing, then! I can get any kind of bearing I need from them. I'm sure they'd have some tough ones that would withstand the abuse. Maybe I should just replace them right away.

As for prop size, I can actually fit up to a 24", but that would leave almost zero room for error. I'm trying a 20x12 to start, on 10s, but I do have room to go bigger.

I should have all of my equipment today, so I'll be starting some more of the "build", or more like install.

Re: 78" Extra 330L - Electric Project!

Got my stuff today! Here's a few pics of the start of the process.

The only thing I have to work out is getting the motor and mount another 1 and 3/4" off the firewall so that the prop assembly clears the cowl. Everything else will pretty much be plug and play.

As might be able to see from the pics, the battery placement will be very easy. Tonnes of room to play with to slide the packs forward or backward. And the servos are very near the CG line, so the plane should be very easy to balance out!
