Perfect Marc, love the two-piece cowl, super easy access to engine and systems. Glad my comments helped a wee bit, and again, can't wait to see this one join the Axis team next Spring. We've got enough war bird nuts in our club alone to have a rally!

Re: Curtis Hawk 75

Hopefully it will look good chasing a hurri or Tomahawk 8^)

Discovered that I was out of glass cloth and fabric, so placed an order for some. Now to putter around until it gets here.

Started on the retracts. The new e-flite 95° 60-120 retract footprint is a little longer than the air retracts they were designed for. Since Dave mentioned this in one of his threads I was able to plan my work around.
I moved the retract mount position forward and cut a relief hole for the endplate wires into the spare shear web. Moving forward will help with nose over's and the end caps still fit over the units.
I added some cross grain balsa to beef up the wheel well edges so they can take some ware n tear.

Dang! You build as fast as Mwavesdave.

Nice job so far. A very different and unique model

Re: Curtis Hawk 75

Glassed the plane with wpu. I experimented with a slurry of DAP lightweight filler and wpu to fill the weave. It was easy to sand, seems to work but time will tell if it holds up the the vibrations.
I covered and hinged the controls.

wbu=Water based urethane? I like the idea of using a mix of the lightweight filler and the wbu to fill the weave. I'll bet there will be no problem with it as far as vibration is concerned. I'm going to try this on my Dirty Birdy.

Re: Curtis Hawk 75

Yes, wbu.

Today I made the 30cal gun blisters and installed into the cowl.
I cut the hatches for the ailerons. Since the servos will be on the hatches I added a basswood doubler. Next step is installing servo rails, then mount them.

I ordered some struts so once they show up I can see if they will work. Then finish up the wheel wells and covers. Not sure if I will bother with the leg covers though.

I think mounting the gas tank and servos all up front will be a tight fit. Going to have to work that through still.

Re: Curtis Hawk 75

On the P-40, I had a scale cockpit kit, so I actually moved the servos a bit aft, which allowed for a lot more room. Shortening the nose for the Hawk though, certainly will limit space. A nice RCGF 20 cc gasser would sip the fuel, and give plenty of power! I checked as well Marc, and I haven't cut out the wheel wells yet for my P-40.

Re: Curtis Hawk 75

Haven't done much the past few weeks as life has been busy. I spent some time centering the engine in the cowl and making the standoffs. Cowl gun covers finished.
I installed the control horns and aileron servos. I added covering over the control surface gaps. No air bleed through here.
I picked up a partially completed TopFlight P40. Haven't decided if I will make it into another variant of the p36, or keep it as a p40

Re: Curtis Hawk 75

Made some progress during the holidays. I need to decide on battery placement still. I plan on making a 'shelf' above the engine for tge ignition and lead, hope I can fit a battery there too.
I painted the plane using house paint and spraygun. First time using this meathod, I really like it. Low odour and dries fast.
Did a bit of weathering, didn't want to over do it. I was not able to find good pics of weathering.
I couldn't resist adding the Callie graphics. I really like the look so far
