if they are using any of the 99% of fpv FPV equipment out there, there is already requirement under law for a license, with hefty fines. That does not stop most from flying without this license.

After all the anger at idiots flying were they shouldn't be it looks like this might have been a Military UAV.

http://www.techenstein.com/cal-fire-...ilitary-drone/

It was spotted at 11,000 feet in the middle of a national forest. Not exactly the realm of impulse buy at hobbyking.

No, not HK off the shelf gear, but certainly not beyond the realm of a dedicated hobbyist.

Electric flying is pretty much seeing how close to a dead short you can run without setting it on fire.

off the shelf impulse buy - yes it could be

I heard it was 11,000 ASL. But flying at something like 900ft AGL. The Big Bear lake down below in the valley is 7000 ft ASL. It was a fixed wing model airplane. Easily flown with any $50 foamy model from Hobbyking or LHS. I think pretty much any model even department store toy helicopter can reach 900 ft AGL, and with FPV most $50 foamies could reach 3000ft AGL in a few minutes

--

here is yet another idiot flying a multicopter near forest fire, fairly close to firefighting aircraft. NOt only supidity writ large for interfering with air traffic, but also I think significant risk of causing wildfires if the drone goes down and lipo gets perforated on tinder dry grass or forest.

I do not believe that only drones will be targeted. People in places of power are fond of blanket rules that effect everyone. No definitions, exemption's or research on their part needed. Ban them all - quick and easy!

Re: Yet another Drone Black Mark

well ... even if the authorities wanted to someone ban all privately owned flying things, it would not be quick nor easy for them to do so. Hauling 10 year olds to prison for flying a 20 gram coax heli in the living room ... won't go over well.

Re: Yet another Drone Black Mark

The media plays a crucial role in it too; they will keep embellishing and publishing any even slightly related story until the "Crucify them, Crucify them" cries from the public drowns out all reason.

Just like gun control, you won't be able to be seen in public with a model airplane without a Swat team descending on you, guns drawn!

Remember when a boy on a bike with a .22 was assumed to be heading out to the edge of town to shoot gophers and crows?

Re: Yet another Drone Black Mark

I think some of these folks are the same ones who steal a STOP sign for their bedroom wall without thinking of the possible consequences. They just don’t get it.
