Hog Bipe ready to go again!

I had my old Hog Bipe in the air today, I had to get used to how it flew again since it's been almost 4 years since it was last flown. The Hog is a great flyer, it does great spins, snaps and tumbles. On it's last flight I was doing flat spins (which looked pretty cool I must say), when it refused to come out of the spin. I got the rotation stopped and was just about level when I ran out of altitude. It cartwheeled across the field shedding parts as it went. Assuming the worst, myself and another flyer went to retrieve the carcass. When we got to the crash site we were pleasantly surprised by the relative lack of serious damage. The engine and firewall were torn out, damaging the turtledeck, the cabanes were bent up and one of the interplane strut mounts had broken out of the wing. In addition, the epoxy holding the tailfeathers on had let go. Except for the damaged strut mount, both wings were undamaged. The tail feathers can be epoxied back on in 5 minutes. The only serious damage was the firewall and turtle deck, even the fuse sides were fine! A few hours and she'll be as good as new. Sometimes you just get lucky!

Cheers!

Jollidude

PS: I won't be doing anymore flat spins with it !

Sounded freaky Crash at first but after what you said about the some repairs it needed, i am sure luck is on you side Wayne, Least it will be back in air soon....

Actually flat spin is one of my favorite manouvers!!...Most of my planes go through Flat spins, except for twins and scale planes...

crashed my hanger9 330Lextra

i crashed my 33% hanger 9 extra.i was doing a upright flatspin which went without a hitch, then went right to a knife edge and thats when the fun started.

i fought to get my plane back for about three minutes which felt like forever.the only thing i could do was to kill the throttle and let it go down.

we found it about a mile away and it didn,t take long for it to get away that far .i was at half throttle went this started.upon inspection of the plane i found the front stab bar broke right at the fuselage.the right half of the stab was pointing up.

this would explain the reason it was all over the sky and when i pulled up elevator it would snap vioently.it sucks when you crash ,but it,s part of the hobby.

The main reason it crashed was that some idiot put the plane into a flat spin without enough altitude to recover , there were no mechanical failures. Having said that, if I'd had another 10' of altitude to play with I would have got away with it!

Cheers!

That is not a crash Jollidude
I call it flat spins landing, may be just a little to hard to the ground
you need to push your throttle a little bit instead of kill the throttle
when it touch down
don't be scare to do it, you just need to get used to it

Hi Jollidude,

I can relate to: "On it's last flight, I was doing flat spins..." HeHeHe

I trimmed out a few of my sport/aerobatic planes to do great upright/inverted flat spins with 'hands off' recovery. (creeping the CG aft and amount of control throw) I could pull out 10 times out of 10...

Then 'mysteriously' (out of the blue, hehehe) the plane would stay hooked into the spin with not enough altitude to recover... Had me stumped. No plane malfunctions, I was doing what I had successfully done before, etc...

Cleaning up the wreckage the last time, I figured it out. I was emptying the tank and...there was less than 1/4 left. I had done all my 'spin testing' earlier in the flights...with more fuel the CG was slightly further ahead...DOAH ! ! ! HeHeHe

I found leaving the plane in the spin(chopping the throttle) caused less damage than an 'almost' recovery...

Most spins I have done is 243. Modified CG Falcon 56. There was this dark bottomed cumulis passing the field. Started spinning right underneath it. After 150 or so spins the plane got 'spit out' of the killer thermal...

Take care,
Have fun,

Dave, you may be right. I had done several successful flat spins before the crash and it was getting close to the end of the flight. I regularly land in a flat spin on the flight simulator without damage, but I didn't "make" the connection to do it when flying the model. There may have been less damage had I just let it spin to the ground. In any case, it "landed" in a hay field with the hay being about 15" high which undoubtedly helped prevent more damage.

Cheers!
