Unhappy Covering woes

I never covered a wing with a radius wing tip before and am having problems with it. Its on a cub, and the wing tip is a challange to say the least.

The monokote always wants to wrinkle at one or the other end, I cannot seem to keep it out.
Doing the flat portion of the wing is fine, but this tip is a headache. I have tried to pull, stretch, etc, but still end up with a big wrinkle at one end.

Anyone got a video of how to do this? I have googled it and am unable to come up with a video showing the wing tip curve being done.
Anyone have a copy of "covering with monokote" they would like to borrow out?

Re: Covering woes

Xanadu,

It's almost impossible to do without making relief cuts along the way. Also, proper temp settings are a must. Stretch and glue down edges with the least amount of heat, then, only after the entire perimiter is adhered, cook it all down with highest heat to get the most shrinkage. If you are using too high heat to adhere the edges, there will be nothing left to shrink down afterards, thus eliminating any chance of getting rid of wrinkles.

Re: Covering woes

I would think if the wrinkles are small they should shrink out with a heat gun. Another way would be to cut small slits where the monokote is bunching to allow it to sit flat. The top and bottom coveriong would cover this over. I am not sure if I have explained this right.

Re: Covering woes

I never thought one could make relief cuts at the wrinkles.
You just overlap the covering and adhere it to itself then as well as down around the edges?

I can see that working fine as I do it with silkspan tissue, but never thought you could with a heat shrink covering.
Will try that and see how it works.
Keep the leading section overlapping the outside of course.

Check out these videos. I've got them saved to my desktop, and refer to them all the time, as refreshers. Lots of good ideas in them.

Re: Covering woes

Tried the relief cuts and overlapping today. Good start, but need lot more practice. I can now see where it will work once done properly.

Thanks for the tips.

Re: Covering woes

Had the same trouble on my Cubs' wings covering them after I clipped the wing tips. I was getting quite frustrated and finally said "good enough". Oh well, nobody will see them when she's flying anyway!!

Cheers

Re: Covering woes

Howdy
What i do is cut a piece of covering approx the width of the outer edge of the wing tip.
Put this on.
Now you dont have to go around the outer edge just to it.
You may have to still cut relief strips.
Works for me.
