Re: BBT Lightened 43% Edge w/ Piped ZDZ180

Before I bevel the elevator hinge lines, I cut the hole in the stab for the box (dremel with router bit) and the hole in the hinge stock (with scroll-saw).

You can see the lamination of 1/2" balsa + 1/8" balsa for the hinge stock... the Andy-Upgrade

Re: BBT Lightened 43% Edge w/ Piped ZDZ180

I had a building breakthrough tonight

Instead of bevelling the hinge stock by hand, I took the time to rig up a system on the bandsaw
.
.
.
15minutes to bevel an elevator hinge and just a slight touch of the sanding bar and... voila

To get bevels this precise would have taken me a solid 1 1/2h to pull off!

Absolutely!! I'll split them, once all the hinges are set, so that they line up perfectly!!

Re: BBT Lightened 43% Edge w/ Piped ZDZ180

This morning, I touched up the beveled elevator stock with my 12" sanding bar and then hinged the pieces together

The hinged assembly was then glued onto the stab and elevator halves at once so that both pieces line up perfectly ... this new way of doing it was from a recent discussion with Andy and we figured it was worth a try!

I really like doing it this way!!! - I will use this method on all future builds

Trev,
How did you hold the balsa stock straight. Did you tack it down on something harder to hold it ?

Brad... If you check in the pictures of the set-up, the base material is a straight piece of 1"x3" hardwood (poplar) and I held the balsa stock on with 3 little drops of CA!!... Worked like a charm!

Brad... This is soo easy, it should be considered CHEATING!!
