I am nearing completion of an E-starter (first electric). Wondering if electric motors require a break-in period, in the way that glow engines do?

If so, what is the procedure? It has the motor that came with the kit installed.

I herd about electric motors needing a brake in period and somthing about dong it in water? It kinda diddent make sence to me. I never do an acctual brake in for electrics I just fly. I wouldent recomened braking it in in water though.

IF it is a brushless motor they is no break in just fly. If you have a brushed motor then yes there is a break in and what it does is mates the brushes to the comutator (I think thats what it is called) if they dont get brke in properly the life span of the motor will decrease. there is a few way of breaking in a motor. 1 being hook a D size cell up to the motor and let it run till the batterie is dead. Next is the water. Do the same as before with a D size batterie but submerise the motor in water and only let it run for 5 - 8 min just dry it off and put some light oil on the bearings and it should be ready to go. Hope this help

I just hook up the motor to the D cell also from the hardware store.
radio Shack always has those little black battery holders.

My Estarter should be here later this week.
What are you going to use for an ESC control and battery??

The break in for a brushed motor is done in water to speed up the process. It seats the brushes to the commutator, helping to lower the current draw and reduce the arcing. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...break+in+water

Also, re-timing the motor will be of benefit. Thes motors are timed to run one way - unfortunately, we run them in reverse. Re-timing will give you about a 15% performance boost for the same current draw. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...ater+break+in+
