You don't need to take off the back plate i don't believe, just the roto-start thing on the engine. This will probibly require the engine being taken off to ensure a good cleaning, just make sure the gear lash is okay when you put it back on. As for cleaner WD-40 usually works well, but you will need another oil to keep it clean after using the WD-40 as it evaporates

I use brake cleaner for lots of things, works great. Typically I use MotoMaster Brake Clean. It's the one in the blue can. Don't get the maximum or high strength stuff as it has another additive in it that can destroy plastic.

WD-40 is not a good thing to put on the one-way, for 1, WD-40 has water in it, and 2, you are cleaning the one-way because there is dirt and oil on it, so why put more oil on it? Too much oil on the one-way will cause it to slip...

You just need to remove the black casing off the back of the motor, you do not need to take off the backplate, it is easiest to do this with the motor out of the truck.

Make note, the one-way needs to go on exactly the same way you take it off, you can put it on backwards, but it wont work, so test it before you put the motor back in the truck.

if you have a pull-start, remove it carfully, so the recoil dosn't come apart, they are a real pain to put backtogether...

You can use brake cleaner, just read the instructions and make sure it is ok for plastic if your not sure, just go to your LHS and buy motor cleaner.

umm... WD-40 has water in it???

The name WD-40 literal means "water displacing, 40th attempt" it gets rid of water, not adds it.

http://www.wd40.com/Brands/wd40_faqs.html

Having said that it can cause your one way to slip. Get some of the brake cleaner. It's a lot cheaper than motor spray from a hobby store and if you get the stuff I said does not harm plastic.

Break cleaner is the way to go..
Seveal LHS in the GTA sell Red Stalion, and it is great.. evaproates very quickly and works like a charm.
I ahve used the Canadian tire NON-CHLORINATED break cleaner.. and it works well too, but leaves a residue for a couple mins after cleaning, but it does eventually dry off..

My favourite is the red stalion, but they have a unique distribution setup that makes it difficult to find.

I know that Pinnacle has it, and have seen it at A&J's before as well.

The key is that it MUST BE NON CHLORINATED, and safe for plastics and rubbers (lol.. I said rubbers.. hehe)

Some people will use WD-40 for cleaning, i guess it works, and lubes the plasitcs, I dono.... As well, the WD-40 will help in the cleaning becasue it prevents dirt from sticking.. i think anyway.

Either way, nitro or break cleaner is waht you want for that particular project, as you need to clean the oneway.. not lube it.. it will get lubed seconds after the first start attempt...

YA, WD-40 has no water, and I was thinking of ball bearings for the oil, sorry lol
