Now that we're on the topic, is there a consensus as to what type of glove might actually save your fingers?

The glove I posted is designed to be impact and cut resistant

Re: Do you wear a glove?

I tried a good industrial glove like that, but i found getting it off to fly very awkward. That style of glove usually is tight fitting compared to generic leather work or welder glove.

I stopped using it cause i bumped my tx one time while removing the glove with the help of the other hand. Lucky the plane starting stand did its job. Now i use a loose glove that can be removed without taking the other hand off the throttle!

Re: Do you wear a glove?

my dad nicked the tip of a running prop over a decade ago while adjusting the throttle on a .15 and it took off the tip of his finger clean off!!!

Re: Do you wear a glove?

I was thinking about the impact gloves being a snug fit and would try for one that is a tiny but loose.

Re: Do you wear a glove?

Our club always has gloves sitting on the restraint posts. It's hard to have a good excuse when safety is sitting within easy reach.

Re: Do you wear a glove?

I don't always wear a glove, yet I know I should. My engines are so predictable, I know that's not a good answer as anything is possible. So, yes, I will now wear a glove. I use the typical long welding glove. I did have a 100cc engine kick back once (had a glove on) as I had the timing wrong and wow did it hurt! No cuts or blood but I did bruise my hand. I suppose those puncture proof gloves are good but the problem is getting them off as they fit tight.

Re: Do you wear a glove?

Yup I always wear one ever since! I should also carry this pic in my flight box! It would serve as a good reminder.

Re: Do you wear a glove?

Show and tell time, my turn! It looks pretty good now compared to a week and a half ago!

No this wasn't a prop, it was a wood splitter and I doubt that a glove would have helped as it was cut 2/3 of the way through before I got it reversed.

I concur with the original poster about the freezing being far worse than the original injury. The DR on call made 12 or more stabs into the wounded area with a needle before she was happy that it had enough freezing. I only threatened to hit her... Oh - did they make you soak it in salt water first too?

Next time I will go to the Veterinary, he looked at my finger and said "Oh ya, we cut ourselves now and then. All we do is give 2 small shots of freezing at the base of the finger and then the whole thing is frozen!"

On the subject of propping an engine, I have never been cut by a kick-back, just bruised. The cuts are from not taking that sharp mold flashing off the prop when you balance it! I have been cut by a buddy's prop by just rolling an engine over TDC to check compression! But yes I do wear a glove now most of the time. Just a light cotton one that I would normally use to fly on a cold day with.

As Frank says if you know your engine a kick-back rarely happens.
