Re: Resurrect the Avro Arrow moulds?

First up is to re-construct the nose & the tail cones.

Not as easy as it sounds.

Drawings were generated to match the plug dimensions.

The front and rear surfaces are really bad, and need to be repaired. Bolt anchors need to be installed to received the new parts, tail cones & nose cone.

I re-constructed the new tail cones, blue item near my feet.

After potting, the rear will be totally resurfaced to square it up again.

Re: Resurrect the Avro Arrow moulds?

This picture kinda gives a good perspective of just how big the fuselage plug is. Such a size presents it's own unique problems.

The new nose cone has been roughed out.
The nose cone anchors are being potted in place.

After potting, the forward section will also need to be totally resurfaced.

Brad has taken the tail cones I made home with him. He will glue on the last 3"-4" of the parachute compartment that extends past the tial pipes.

Mike

Good work!!

As I told you count me in.
I vote on keeping it open for rest of the modelers to see. A Canadian project like this deserves proper exposure. I can't wait for the day when 5 Arrows fly in formation.

PM me what you need.

Re: Resurrect the Avro Arrow moulds?

Mike,
I have a 3 view that is about 28" square. I am not sure how accurate it is but it does have the fuse cross sections and the wing airfoil's on it. The name on the bottom is J.H. Stroomenbergh July 79. The scale is around 3" to 12'.
You mentioned the wing airfoil probably needing to be inverted and from the looks of this you are probably right. I have a whole bunch of airfoils in my pc that I use for my cnc foam cutter so will have a look to see if I can find one that is close. If not maybe I can modify one to work. Do you know what the wing chord is on the mold?
Got to have something to do to keep my mind off my other problem.
John

Re: Resurrect the Avro Arrow moulds?

Mike,
Keep up the good work also as it gives us builders a chance to see how somebody else works out there problems. Would never of thought to climb a wall to fix the tail section. I would have taken a day to figure it out with it laying down. I would not like seeing it kept a secret as it is a large aircraft that is interesting to watch come together.
Just noticed no safety harness when leaning off the wall. I thought I would be first as sure as H somebody will mention it. Just having some humour for an old fart.

Thumbs up Re: Resurrect the Avro Arrow moulds?

Hey Mike , I got the tail-cone tip cut out & glued to the tail, it will need some sanding for fitting but its dose look like the last one I made(10 yrs ago). As for any one thinking about getting onboard with this project, now is the time as it is in the early stages and the cost is small if you wait till later it will cost you much more or will not be available at all. Mike has offered to do most of the work as far as the mould & parts to be made for free .He will not pick-up the cost for materials. If five people want a fuse , it would be the cost of the materials divided by five ( not alot of money) one could have a fuse and build his own wings etc later. Call Mike (or PM) and he would love to hear from you.

see you monday nite Mike ,

Cut up...Really???
That would be a real shame
I would love to have one!

Mighty fast work, I'm impressed! That is going to be one awesome plane. I think a couple of guy's are going to have to have a good sized trailer to carry those monsters around.

Oh My!

This is starting to sound like a repeat of when they scrapped the original!

Why destroy the molds?

Hide them away for later productions! (and spare parts) but to produce so few and then DESTROY the molds just to ensure the novelty of the product is ... immoral ...
