Same here, there are quite a few for us tinkerer's. Lots of times making something you have a choice and then it gets down to parts. I have a breadboard with 3 transformers and 2 experimental boards(wire jumper) mounted on it. Goes from 6 to 24v with rectifiers. Great for making a project and troubleshooting before making the pc board.

Just found a simple used welder with 50 amp 45 volt output for $35.00.

I think I could use my variac along with the transformer out of the welder for something similar to your transformers and also to safely power my foam cutting bows which are all different lengths and wire diameters.

I have a cheap voltmeter I could use to monitor output voltage.

Lots of amperage available if needed as variac is 15 amps @ 120 volts.

What do think?

Ken,
That will give lots of power for any length of wire. After using a 3 amp Radio Shack special for years I was given a 24v 8amp power supply which I use now. It was lacking on the longer cuts. Mounted on the case a dimmer switch and a set of spring connectors. Good idea about the meter as with mine it will burn out the wire and you have a place to set before starting.
As with all my electrical goodies I keep myself quite isolated from the main power. My favorite bow is a hockey stick with music wire for the arms. I even tape the wood for safety.

To make it even safer I will try a GFI receptacle.

I will have to do some testing to see if the GFI will work at lower voltages.

That way I could use it on the output side of the variac.

I have another variac that is rated at 12 amps but I need to do a little work on it.

Cheers
