Looks like an ideal spot! Enjoy!

Finally got my floats wet! Wind went down enough just as it was getting dark, flying went excellent, photographs - not so much. Between the poor light & my son having trouble leading the plane enough, the pictures are not that good. The slough is drying up pretty fast too!

Not sure where Long Lake Alberta is but I do work often close to Long Lake Saskatewan.
It just so happens I live 3 miles away from Long Lake on the North West side if you get close to that end.

Re: Anyone float flying yet?

Congrats O.P.R.N Nice to see the floats being used this time of the year. I will have to wait a bit, the ice is still 3 ft thick here.
I have a question for the group. I aquired an old Areo 40 that I am slowly converting to electric, I would like to see this on floats this summer, How much experience should I have before attemping to do this?. I know, No Guts No Glory, but I wouldn't want to blow 600.00 worth of electrical parts.
I will put lots of time on my cub with floats before attempting this endevour.
Thanks
Don

Re: Anyone float flying yet?

My float plane wieghs in at under 4 pounds, has a 5 foot wingspan so any puddle with a couple of inches of water & 50 foot length is fair game. I have flown it off of the grass at the club field too with the floats on!

Your Aero (Star?) 40 will be a little heavier than mine and your Cub so expect it to be faster on take off & landing. Yes it will require a bit more experiance but if you have a buddy that can test fly it for you it will give you an idea of the way it handles & the speeds it likes for take offs & landings.

I didn't do anything special to waterproof the electronics in mine. The radio gear & speed controller are all on the cabin floor so when it turns turtle they are at the highest point & have never got wet. The motor can get totaly submersed & it does it no harm at all!

I know - we had it upside down 5 times one Saturday when we insisted on float flying in a 40 km/h wind!

Could there be more than one Long Lake in Saskatewan? This one is just across the straw curtain east of Provost & north of Senlac.

Well....the Lake is actually called Last Mountain Lake (nicknamed Long Lake as it is about 85 miles long)

Re: Anyone float flying yet?

I'm going to issue the challenge again this year!

Who will be the first to fly off the water in 2013?

Include a date, place and picture please.

Re: Anyone float flying yet?

Feb. 2 2013 Well - I gave it a go... I suppose you have to have a successfully landing to call it a flight!

Take off went good, then the camera battery went dead so I made a curcuit & set up for a down wind landing(no water rudders & I didn't want to go wading at -4) to give Jeremy time to go get fresh batteries.

Yup! I overshot the landing & she stubbed her toe hard into the bank. So I will take the time now to put a water rudder on - seeing as I will have the glue out anyway.

Who's up next?

Re: Anyone float flying yet?

Yup! You guessed it! I should have done the flying first while it was calm but Jeremy wanted to fish so we did that first.

As far as I know I'm off next Saturday...
