Just looking for the best price on an OS 46AX engine. Which store, or is it better to buy second hand?

Just starting out. A good engine to pick. OS engines are a tad expensive but I wouldn't go with a second hand one if you're a beginner. Not unless it's specified as "new in box (NIB)". A new one will be more reliable since you know it's history.

Why not take a look at the Evolution 46NX. Supposedly designed to be fool proof. I've found it to be a rock solid engine that never needs tuning. It's also $20 cheaper than the OS.

At our club we all joke about the appropriateness of the name "evloution" for the engine- For some reason all the guys that have these engines get them to "evolve" to OS engines..LOL

OS is always my #1 choice for engines. After 35 years in the hobby and tinkering with all brands of engines, the OS's have always run the best.

Evolutions can be made to run better with higher nitro fuels, 15% or higher. OS's can run on 10 or even 5% with no problems.

Getting back to where to buy OS engines, I can only recommend LHS's here in Ontario, but if you mail order your stuff, I suggest Great Hobbies or Hobby Wholesale; both have online pricing.

Whatever engine you ultimately choose, take time to learn its characteristics and call on someone familiar with the type if you have snags.

You'll get the most out of it that its' capable og giving you.

Evolution are supposedly easier to start as they are low compression engines. Low compression = low power. As previously mentionned, most people will dump them as soon as possible.

Nothing wrong with starting with an OS, as long as you are carefull not to cook it. Use a tach to tune it.

You may also be interested the book "All about engine" by Higley.

I've also had good luck with Thunder Tiger PRO engines.

As for price, you'll find most major shops in Canada have similar pricing (hobbywholesale, greathobbies, hobbyalley, etc...) you may be able to save a bit ordering from the US or overseas but don't forget you'll be charged 5$ customs processing by cad post + gst and pst.

I will probably buy a OS .46 AX, as they seem to fit the bill. I know they are probably more money, but worth it.

Judging my your user name.. Im geussing you like warbirds? If your putting it in a PTS Mustang, You would be better of buying an OS55AX now, so that when you become used to it, you will have the extra power and wont have to buy yet another motor as you become board with the 46. The 55 suits any 40 size plane perfectly.

I have been pretty impressed with the Evolution glow engines I have run (3 so far).

Dont dismiss them, they are good quality engines. However, if given the choice with an O.S. only $20 more, I would go with the O.S.

The OS .46AX is easliy the best in it's class. Runs like a gem, very consistant idle and good response time. Lots of power for 46 sized planes.

I have an Evo 46 TPS (trainer power system, or "alpha") engine which runs great - good power, throttle response, idle, starts easy, no issues. I did buy that one second hand as well. The newer Evo .46NX is appearantly a good engine also with some refinements and better compression.

I also have 2 OS LA engines...the .40 and .46. I wouldn't rate them as well, although if not asked to do too much they perform adequately. The .40LA powers my old trainer great, but I tried it in the Pulse XT 40 and it kept stalling. Just not enough torque.

I completely agree with the others - invest a little extra for the OS .46AX, you won't regret it and will have a great engine for any 40-46 size project. I got mine from HobbyWholesale...if you watch they occasionally have free shipping deals for MAAC members.

Second hand is an option - if you are confident in the seller and can get one with minimal use (just broken in or 2-3 flights on it). I have 2 second hand engines and both run very well. I would be hesitant to buy a first engine used though, and a new one teaches you a lot about break-in and proper adjustment...not to mention warranty.
