Gliderman BOT clone

Just bought this 3m Bird of Time electric clone made by Gliderman- but can not find any instructional info on it- has anybody any experience with this model?
I am very impressed with the quality of the Kit beautiful 2 piece fiberglas fuse
and 4 piece built up wings with exceptional covering, came with everything except esc. for 200 bucks, only drawback is no flaps or airbrakes, might have to consider adding this -
The old BOT has always had a good reputation as a good thermal plane, should be interesting to see this old classic as an electric version in the air.

Re: Gliderman BOT clone

Let us know how the build goes Kai. Heck that is a reasonable price for such a nice plane!

Re: Gliderman BOT clone

I checked the plane out at Gliderman yesterday and they have/had them on sale for under $100 US.

Gliderman BOT clone completed

Got her all put together now-
Mods : added electric spoilers right in front of main spar, outer wing panels attached permanently
getting the CG right was a problem added a lot of resin and lead inside canopy plus still had to add almost a pound up front,in hindsight I probably should have moved the Rudder and Elev. servos up front with pushrods , changed supplied spinner with a Turbo spinner for cooling total flying weight is coming in at 7.5 pounds, not that bad for plane that size.
Just give me some spring weather so we can see how she does

Re: Gliderman BOT clone

Wow that is pretty heavy, that is 45 oz heavier then my 4m F5J glider. The BOT arf is about 3.5 to 4lbs, so your wing loading will be somewhere at 16.5ozsqft. They have a bad rep for being very tail heavy and requiring a lot of lead, I lost interest in that glider when I read that, but it flies well as a sloper. I would be interested to see how it works for you.

The BOT ARF weight quoted is "DRY" weight no Motor,Batt, servos etc.

Here is a quote from KiwiKid :
"This is a floater. In the lightest of thermals it will fly even at 7.5 lbs."

Don't know what kind of airfoil used, it is thick and under-chambered, so I suspect a high lift one-

I don't expect it to be a TD ship, so lets see what happens.

Re: Gliderman BOT clone

A friend and I both made e-gliders out of the ARF BOT, and they were about 66 to 67ounces ready to fly with batteries and all. That is about 54 ounces less than your Gliderman. At 66oz., they actually thermal reasonably well, if a bit oddly. They did require some work to improve the tip stall characteristics of that skinny tip. I cut mine off to a more reasonable chord, and added some wash-out. That helped quite a bit.

https://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/showthread.php?t=132539

They are a bit of a pig to spot land even at 66oz. with spoilers. The fuse is way too short for the yaw inertia, and it is really easy to get a yaw oscillation going trying to make corrections.

My 4m e-Maxa weighs about 1780g (63oz) ready to fly.

Kevin

The ARF BoT, and the original design, both used a Clark Y thinned to 9% for an airfoil. The Clark Y is actually a Gottenburg (sp?) airfoil. thinned from 15% to 12.8% if I remember correctly. I forget which Go number off the top of my head.
