Best Batteries Period

Hey everyone,

through my search through the majority of my resources, I still have an unanswered question regarding batter choice.
I'm in the process of building an 8' Beaver, and am looking into what batteries i should be using. The A123 sound appealing, but how can you check voltage?

If any one wants to take the time and let it be known what battery set up has worked the best for you, please do so.. Also please let me know everything I'll need from a-z in the battery realm.
I'll be using a DX7 controller and a Saito 180.

thanks in advance.
- matt.

Thumbs up Re: Best Batteries Period

I am using 2 X 7.4V Li-Ion 2600 MAH packs on 2 X futaba 2.4 ghz recievers in my 30% extra they both goto a smartfly sport regulator and I have had no problems. You can also use a normal voltage meter to check voltage.

Hope this helps.

Re: Best Batteries Period

2 x Fromeco (Lithium) 7.4 v 2600 mah with two arizona regulators down to 6v (built by Fromeco).

or two duralite (Lithium) 7.4V 2150 mah + two duralite voltage regulators.

It is a well proven setup that works great. I have it in a YAK 35% and an Extra 260 30%.

Cheers,

Will

It depends on the airplane size and your intented use of the model. For a larger plane, 35% or more, two 2300mA packs would be recommended. You could get away with one but you have no redundency, not easy to tell when the pack is about to die because of the constant voltage and would need to charge between every other flight.

A123s do not require anything special other than a charger that supports them.

Re: Best Batteries Period

There's other options for A123, VPX or 1100mah packs are out there and are cheap as well. You can set up a plane from .40 size to 40%.

Also, you DONT need to charge every other flight unless you under power your airplane. I have A123's on everything I fly and typically get 5-6 flights and could get more if I added packs. I never charge at home, always at the field since it takes about 8 mins.

They are definitely the future of rc and by far the most user friendly and in most cases the cheapest too.

Ways in which they are better then all other batterys:

Longer lasting (more cycle life)
Safer design and chemistry (they dont blow up)
No regulation needed for most of todays servos (check to be sure)
Cheaper if purchased through the right channels
Faster charging (10amps+)
Lighter due to not needing regulators
Discharge rate (can provide up to 60c)
Flat discharge curve (holds voltage throughout charge)
Safely use 90% of its capacity vs 70% or less for others (makes a 2300mah pack more like a 2500mah pack in comparison)
Easy to build your own packs, in your own configurations if so desired.

Reasons to buy other types of batterys:

.................

I Cant argue with that! lol

Re: Best Batteries Period

I'm for a 6V lead acid... best battery ever
pro's
-inexpensive
-available at can-tire wal-mart ect
-can use as an anchor when dead
-can only be mounted upright, so no inverted flight
-acid very corrosive
- there may be more so feel free to add some

con's
- Ummm might have mention some in the pro's but can't really see any...

Once you go lead acid you don't go back...
