Re: Winter flying
The lights look cool!
I try to fly all year as can be seen on some of my youtube vids.. Don't know if you have a transmitter glove - this one from HK is worth the $12.99 they charge for sure.. It is not really warm, but does keep the wind off. That said I learned the hard way it is useless for hand launching ... Yes I tried and the result was predictable. I could not get my hand back in fast enough to avoid a crash... doh http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=11738 Cheers Chris

Re: Winter flying
Important thing is to keep your Lipos warm, keep them in the pocket or in a warm car, if they are exposed on the plane, shorten your flying time since their performance will degrade with the cold especially if they are in prop blast. I have some of those chemical reusable hand warmer pads that keep heat for a while and use them in my transmitter glove and sometimes in my lipo case if I have to take them to the field.
Chris, actually I do hand launch with the glove on, I learned early, that I throw curve ball with my right hand so I switched to the left for all my launches, nice and straight. That allows me to keep my right hand in the glove and on the aileron elevator controls. I just power up and throw, since I have my right hand on the important controls I have plenty of time to get my left hand in the glove. Comes with practice and desire to fly all year. Dan |

Re: Winter flying
I fly all year, but I use the frozen lake behind my house as an airstrip, so it's easy to come in to warm up!

1 - It's not very deep. The sticks on my DX8 rub on the window 2 - The plastic grommet they give you for the antenna 'hole' is far too small for those stubby 2.4GHz radio antennas. It mainly keeps the wind out. Some have suggested throwing in one of those hand warmer packs for heat? http://www.greathobbies.com/productinfo/?prod_id=NOHTM4 Last edited by philipa_240sx; 09-23-2011 at 07:17 AM. |

Re: Winter flying
Thanks for the compliiments on the lights cannot wait to get some video in flight to show it off
I have used a mitt like that for photography before and found them to be a little cumbersome but for 13 bux I may have to try the turnigy one Has anyone ever tried not cutting the fingertips off gloves but perhaps just the finger pads if I can find a thin set that fit snug enough I may try it, I was actually planning on getting one of those gel packs with the littlecopper disc that have the chemical reaction to keep lipos warm either keep them in my pocket or even in the lipo sack totally reusable I am sure it will save me over the throw away ones pretty fast EDIT: Just found this hmmmmmmm should I ? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...%5FSystem.html Last edited by 00nothing; 09-22-2011 at 07:48 PM. |

Re: Winter flying
I fly year round. I just wear thin leather gloves. No need to cut holes in them, youll get used to it. Fly the plane, not the transmitter
As others have mentioned..Lipos dont like the cold. Below 10 Celsius, they loose 40% of there power. I keep them warm over the defrost in the car with the windscreen pointed into the sun if I can. Oh yeah... Dont forget to put skis on eh! lol |

Re: Winter flying
About those lipos,
I've been using Gens Ace lipos and they perform very well in cold. Even when exposed to full prop blast on 0 degC days with my EPP foam planes. Any similar hi performance lipos like the Turnigy Nanotech's, Hyperion G3's, Thunderpower, etc should perform well. The very low IR of these packs seem to help deliver the power in cold weather. I do keep my lipo's warm in an inside pocket of my jacket prior to flying as well. |

Re: Winter flying
Over in Uxbridge we fly all winter in all kinds of conditions - down to about -10C in calm weather. We all put skis on the planes & depending on snow conditions flatten out a runway somehow. We use the Turnigy mits & new for the coming year we have some HK mitt warmers to try. We use thin gloves with tips cut off as well. Flight times are usually a bit shorter than summer as skis create more drag & lipos are slightly less efficient.
